     Vocal Gharana Delhi Earlier

Founded By

## Origins & History

Amir Khusrau was a disciple of the Chishti saint Nizamuddin Auliya, and later accounts credit him with shaping [qawwali](/bn-in/vocal/hindustani-classical/qawwali). Sunil Sharma notes that Khusrau documented none of the musical inventions credited to him, so his founding role rests on tradition. Lineage accounts count between two and twelve founding disciples, with Miyan Samat bin Ibrahim as the chief.

Schofield, as Malini Nair reports, dates Mughal references to khayal in the Delhi qawwals' repertoire to about 1637. The family of the Delhi gharana calls its own line the oldest khayal gharana. Bonnie C. Wade, quoted by Mukund Lath, names Gwalior the oldest, and Aditi Deo dates khayal gharanas as named institutions to the mid-19th century.

The documented line begins in the early 19th century. Irfan Zuberi calls **Miyan Achpal**, court singer under Bahadur Shah Zafar, a representative of the Qawwal Bache gharana, and Joep Bor's sarangi research names him the teacher of **Tanras Khan** and of Zafar himself. After 1857 Tanras Khan left Delhi for the Nizam's court in Hyderabad, where he died in 1885 or 1890.

Distinctive style, techniques, and aesthetic philosophy

### Overall Style

Accounts of the style stress **taans**, fast runs of notes, of many kinds, and the complex patterns called **phirat**, which Irfan Zuberi credits to Bade Mohammad Khan. The repertoire is rooted in qawwali: beside khayal and tarana the family lists Sufi forms such as **qaul**, qalbana and naqsh. Schofield places the community's early khayal at Mughal courts and at Sufi shrines.

#### Many kinds of taan

Accounts of the line, and of its Delhi branch, stress the variety of its taans; Karthik Venkatesh counts some 50 types in the Delhi branch.

#### Phirat

Irfan Zuberi relays that Bade Mohammad Khan first sang the phirat, complex taan patterns that Gwalior and other gharanas later adapted.

#### Qawwali roots

The line began as a community of Delhi qawwals. Schofield names them as early khayal singers at both Mughal courts and Sufi shrines.

#### Sufi forms beside khayal

The family's repertoire list spans qawwali, qaul, qalbana and naqsh, as well as khayal and tarana.

## Signature Repertoire

The repertoire joins the qawwal's Sufi forms to classical singing: qawwali, **qaul**, qalbana and naqsh beside khayal and tarana, in the family's own list. Khayal entered Mughal literature as part of the Delhi qawwals' repertoire by about 1637, in Schofield's dating. In Karachi, Naseeruddin Saami of the line is known for a 49-note microtonal scale.

What is the Qawwal Bacchon gharana?

The Qawwal Bacchon gharana is a hereditary lineage of Delhi qawwals and [khayal](/bn-in/vocal/hindustani-classical/khayal) singers who trace their descent to the disciples of Amir Khusrau. Katherine Butler Schofield names the qawwal bachche as the main early khayal singers, at Mughal courts and Sufi shrines.

Who founded the Qawwal Bacchon gharana?

Lineage tradition names the poet Amir Khusrau and his disciples, with Miyan Samat bin Ibrahim as the chief disciple; accounts give between two and twelve. Sunil Sharma notes that Khusrau documented none of the musical inventions credited to him. The documented line begins in the early 19th century with Miyan Achpal and Tanras Khan.

Which musicians belong to the Qawwal Bacchon gharana today?

In Karachi the family of Munshi Raziuddin traces its ancestry to the line, among them his son Fareed Ayaz and his nephew and pupil Naseeruddin Saami, known for a 49-note microtonal scale. In Delhi, the khayal family of the Delhi gharana calls its own line a branch of the qawwal bachche.

How is the Qawwal Bacchon gharana related to the Delhi gharana of khayal?

The [Delhi gharana](/bn-in/gharana/delhi-gharana-khayal) traces its ancestry to the qawwal bachche, and its family calls it a branch that emerged when this line took up khayal. One story makes the two branches of a pair of brothers, Hasan Sawant and Bula Kalawant. Bonnie C. Wade does not grant the Delhi line gharana status.

Is the Qawwal Bacchon gharana the oldest khayal gharana?

The Delhi family calls its line the oldest khayal gharana, while Bonnie C. Wade, quoted by Mukund Lath, names Gwalior the oldest. Aditi Deo dates khayal gharanas as named institutions to the mid-19th century, and Schofield names the qawwal bachche as khayal's main early singers.

Did Amir Khusrau found the gharana or invent khayal?

Tradition credits Khusrau with both, but Sunil Sharma notes that he documented none of the musical inventions credited to him, and Schofield says Khusrau did not invent khayal. The lineage still traces its descent to his disciples, and later accounts credit him with shaping qawwali.

How many disciples did Khusrau have, and who was Mian Samat?

Accounts give between two and twelve founding disciples; the family's own account says twelve. Lineage tradition names Mian Samat bin Ibrahim as Khusrau's chief disciple, from whom the qawwal bachche line descends.

When does the documented history of the gharana begin?

The documented line begins in the early 19th century with Miyan Achpal, court singer under Bahadur Shah Zafar, and his pupil Tanras Khan. Earlier, Schofield dates Mughal references to khayal in the Delhi qawwals' repertoire to about 1637.
