About the Tabla course
The tabla course online, prepared by KalaSudha, teaches the Hindustani drum pair from your first stroke to a judged concert. Teachers based in India and abroad teach live online lessons worldwide, and you book them through KalaSudha on your teacher's calendar. The programme has three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. Beginners need no music background; if you have played before, a placement session finds your level.
Your path in each module is 12 topics: eight core topics plus four open slots your teacher fills from electives, their own topics or both. The full path is 108 topics across nine modules. How long it takes depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs. Your teacher closes a topic only when its check is met.

You learn to count as you learn to play. Padhant, the spoken recitation of bols, comes before the stroke, and tala theory runs through every level: cycles, notation, tihai arithmetic and layakari. Between lessons you record the practice task and your teacher gives feedback on the recording.
Musicians learn from each other as well as from a teacher. You hear how another learner plays the phrase you are working on, and you play for people who know what it takes. In a guru's class, students hear each other's riyaz and accompany one another; sangat, playing with other musicians, is part of the training. A cohort brings that into the course. The guided rehearsal and the review that close every module become a performance for the group, and Intermediate adds phrase exchanges and accompaniment.
One-to-one lessons are always available, and cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand. Teachers teach live in the language they set for the course. Workshops and summer camps come near you when enough learners sign up; to hear about workshops, register your interest on your city page by email or WhatsApp.
Each level ends with a reviewed presentation and leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma (see certificates and diplomas). Register your interest to hear by email or WhatsApp when a cohort's dates and times are announced, or ask about one-to-one lessons in the Academy.

How the course works
One shared core, with your teacher's choices
- 8 core topics
- Every learner takes them, in order.
- 4 teacher-set slots
- Filled from 6 electives or your teacher’s own topics.
-
Recite first, then play
Padhant comes before the stroke at every level. You say each phrase, then play it, so your teacher can hear whether a fault is in the memory or the hand. -
Feedback on your recordings
Most topics ask for a practice recording with both hands in view. Your teacher reviews it against the topic's completion check and sets the next correction. -
Six gharanas, one shared core
Listen to six tabla gharanas from Foundation. Intermediate and Advanced each have an elective for each school, while every learner meets the same core completion checks. -
Learn alongside others
Join a cohort when one opens, or learn one-to-one. In a cohort the rehearsal and review topics become performances for fellow learners.

Questions about the Tabla course
Practical answers about starting, lessons and assessment.
Yes. The tabla course prepared by KalaSudha runs online in three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. You learn in live lessons with a teacher, and tala theory runs alongside playing: cycles, notation, tihai arithmetic and layakari.
Each level ends with a reviewed presentation and a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. Ask about the course in the Academy.
A beginner on the KalaSudha tabla course does not need to choose a gharana first. The shared core has no single lineage, and Foundation introduces the Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow, Farrukhabad, Benares and Punjab gharanas through labelled listening.
From Intermediate you can take electives in one school, such as Farrukhabad or Benares, with a teacher who teaches that material. You can complete every award without a speciality.
Yes. In live online lessons your tabla teacher watches your hands and listens to each bol, then sets the next correction. Between lessons you practise the task set for the current topic, reciting each phrase before you play it, and keep a log with the date, minutes, goal and tempo.
You record the practice task with both hands in view, and your teacher reviews it against the topic's completion check. How long you practise each day is agreed with your teacher.
One-to-one tabla lessons are always available on the KalaSudha course, at your own pace, and you can take several lessons on one topic. Group cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand.
Register your interest to hear by email or WhatsApp when a batch's dates and times are announced. In a cohort you rehearse and present to the group, and your topics close on your own evidence.
Learning the tabla on the KalaSudha course typically takes 9–12 months for Foundation, 9–15 months for Intermediate and 12–30 months for Advanced.
The months are a guide you agree with your teacher. The pace depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs, and your teacher closes each topic only when its completion check is met.
Online Indian classical music lessons with KalaSudha cost from £30 / $30 an hour, set by each teacher. Each type of lesson a teacher gives can have its own price. You book and pay through KalaSudha and receive an invoice.

On KalaSudha's online Indian classical music courses, teachers assess students topic by topic. Each topic credits named skills, and the teacher closes it only after reviewing the student's work. Foundation assessment uses practical work and spoken questions. Intermediate adds written theory, and Advanced adds theory papers and a judged stage performance. A module certificate follows each module, and KalaSudha issues an award at the end of each level.
To find a good tabla teacher, or guru, look for one who can tell you who they learned from. From your first lesson, a good teacher checks your hand placement and the basic bols, the spoken syllables for each stroke. On KalaSudha, each teacher's lineage is on their profile. Pick one yourself, or ask us to match you.
Lessons are live and online, from £30 / $30 an hour, set by each teacher. If you have played before, your teacher first reviews where you stand. Where enough learners sign up, we also bring workshops and summer camps near them. Our courses include a tabla course in three levels. Ask about tabla lessons in the Academy.
