## Event Details

This August, our London Ragas Baithak welcomes Pandit Ajay Prasanna, four-time Grammy-nominated flautist and one of India's leading bansuri exponents, to The Tate Institute on the 20th. He returns after last November's four-city tour with us, from Oxford to Duke's Hall, and this time comes mid-tour with Gorillaz, who featured his bansuri on their album Parvat (The Mountain). We thank him for making room for our Darbar in a packed diary. Kayam Hussain accompanies him on tabla.

Pandit Ajay Prasanna carries the Banaras Gharana flute legacy of his father, Pandit Bholanath Prasanna, whose students include Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. His honours include the Global Indian Music Award and the Sangeet Ratna. Kayam, son and student of tabla maestro Ustad Shahbaz Hussain, who opened this series in July, has performed as a tabla player with Gorillaz.

Like every Ragas evening of ours, this one asks you to pause. Indian classical traditions treat music as meditation, the healing resonance of sound (Shabd) as a way to restore balance within ourselves and our communities. The bansuri suits this purpose: it is breath made audible, and a long alap can settle a room the way slow breathing settles the mind. Sit close, put the phone away, and let the sound do its work of connection, mindfulness, and renewal.

If you are in London or around, do join. If you have any special needs, contact us.

Doors open at 6:45 PM.

Audience Policy:

- Unauthorised filming or photography is not permitted.
- The use of mobile phones (including texting) is not allowed during the event. We kindly ask for your cooperation. Thank you!

## Frequently Asked Questions

   Where is The Tate Institute?

The Tate Institute is at **1 Wythes Road, Silvertown, London E16 2DN**, in East London.

Henry Tate paid for the building in 1887 as a social club for workers at the **Tate Sugar Refinery**. Newham Council owns the building. **ReSpace Projects** holds a 25-year lease and got the keys in March 2024. ReSpace is restoring it as a community venue, and the building hosts events as parts of it reopen.

For travel, see [how to get to our London venues](/en-au/faq/how-do-i-get-to-kalasudhas-concert-venues-in-london). For other concerts in the city, see [where to hear Indian classical music live in London](/en-au/faq/where-can-i-hear-indian-classical-music-live-in-london).

Where can I hear live Indian classical music in London, and which venues does KalaSudha use?

You can hear Hindustani (North Indian) classical music live in London at London Ragas, KalaSudha's concert series in London. Its evenings are [baithaks](/en-au/faq/at-the-concert/what-is-a-baithak): the audience sits close to the musicians. London Ragas can take place at different venues across London, and KalaSudha plans to add more baithaks in other parts of London. KalaSudha is based in London, so every concert tour it organises also plays London once.

See [how to book tickets for a London concert](/en-au/faq/how-do-i-book-tickets-for-kalasudhas-indian-classical-concerts-in-london) and [how to get to the venues](/en-au/faq/how-do-i-get-to-kalasudhas-concert-venues-in-london).

Who is the flautist Pandit Ajay Prasanna, and what is his musical lineage?

[**Pandit Ajay Prasanna**](/en-au/artist/ajay-prasanna) is a [flute](/en-au/instrument/flute) player from a musical family. He carries forward the legacy of his father, Bholanath Prasanna, a flute master whose students include Hariprasad Chaurasia. He plays in the style of the Banaras gharana. He has performed across India and abroad, including at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and at festivals in Asia and Europe. His honours include Grammy nominations, the Global Indian Music Award for his album Cinema, the Sangeet Ratna Award and the Surmani Award.

Who is the tabla player Kayam Hussain, and who taught him?

[**Kayam Hussain**](/en-au/artist/kayam-hussain) is a British [tabla](/en-au/instrument/tabla) player based near Rochdale, in the north of England. He is the son and student of [Ustad Shahbaz Hussain](/en-au/artist/shahbaz-hussain), and he grew up inside the tradition, learning at home and appearing on stage beside his father from a young age. He has played tabla with Gorillaz. At KalaSudha, he accompanies visiting masters at the London Ragas baithak.

What is a bansuri, how is it made, and how is it played?

A [**bansuri**](/en-au/instrument/flute) is a transverse flute cut from a single length of seasoned bamboo. It has no keys and no moving parts, only six finger holes, or seven in Pannalal Ghosh's style. The maker burns or drills the blow hole and the finger holes. The player controls pitch through the lips at the blow hole, breath pressure and **half-holing**, covering a finger hole in part, which gives the slides and bends of a raga. Until the 1940s it was not thought a concert instrument; Pannalal Ghosh made a larger [bansuri](/en-au/instrumental/hindustani-classical/bansuri-flute) for the classical stage.
