About KalaSudha in Cork
Indian classical music in Cork has shared a stage with Irish traditional music, in a county concert the Irish Examiner reported in July 2018. The ensemble, Continuing Traditions, was formed by the sarod player Wajahat Khan and the Cork composer Peadar Ó Riada. Its concert was set for 8 July 2018 at Ionad Cultúrtha in Baile Mhúirne, County Cork. The Indian sections were built on ragas and talas, the melodic frameworks and rhythmic cycles of the music.
The Irish Examiner described Peadar Ó Riada as a multi-instrumentalist and choir director as well as a composer, and the ensemble as six musicians on traditional instruments and percussion. KalaSudha is preparing concerts and workshops for Cork with top-class Indian classical musicians. Our Cork listings will name the performers and the venue before booking opens. Newcomers are welcome, and no knowledge of ragas is needed.
The KalaSudha academy teaches the sarod and the sitar online, in lessons with a live teacher. Each course has levels its instructor sets with us, and top educationists vet the result. Cork workshops would follow only once local interest and suitable arrangements are both in place, and nothing is planned yet. Press Register for updates for Cork news.
Why Cork
What sets KalaSudha apart in Cork
-
Sarod beside the uilleann pipes
Continuing Traditions set the sarod beside uilleann pipes and harp. Its Indian sections came with tabla accompaniment, so the two sound worlds met in one programme.
-
A family link to Cúil Aodha
The Irish Examiner recalled that the Khan family performed in Cúil Aodha in 1981. Wajahat Khan went back there in 2017, the year before Continuing Traditions played Baile Mhúirne.
