About KalaSudha in Jaipur
Indian classical music in Jaipur has two gharanas, or schools, named after the city: one of Kathak dance and one of khayal singing. The Jaipur gharana of Kathak grew among hereditary families in the princely states of Rajasthan. Its dancers put their weight on nritta, pure dance, with strong footwork called tatkar and layakari, the play of rhythm against the beat cycle.
The khayal school, often called the Jaipur gharana, took shape in the late 19th century. Vamanrao Deshpande writes that its singer Alladiya Khan named it after Jaipur, the region he belonged to. Deshpande, who trained in the gharana, describes its medium as 'swara conditioned by laya', sung full-throated at a slow tempo.
For learners who want to start, KalaSudha's online courses teach sitar, tabla and every other discipline, Kathak included, and each level closes with a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. Workshops and summer camps come to Jaipur once enough learners there sign up. KalaSudha also presents concerts such as the Kala Festival, a touring festival, and releases recordings and concert videos you can play at home.
