About KalaSudha in Kochi
In Fort Kochi, a Kathakali centre on KB Jacob Road has run since 1994, and its programme brings Indian classical music in Kochi (Cochin) together with Kerala's own arts. It lists Kathakali, Indian classical music, south Indian classical dance and Kalaripayattu, the Kerala martial art, and it also runs workshops for visitors.
Kathakali, the first item on that list, is the classical dance-drama of Kerala. Actor-dancers in painted makeup and large costumes enact stories from the Hindu epics through hand gestures and facial expression. Two singers sing the text. The name joins katha, story, and kali, play, and the form is separate from Kathak, the classical dance of north India.
Kochi residents can play as well as listen. KalaSudha's online courses start tabla and sitar at Foundation, among every discipline it teaches, and a certificate or diploma marks the end of each level. Once enough learners in the city sign up, workshops and summer camps follow. Recordings and concert videos from KalaSudha play online, and the Kala Festival, a touring festival, is among its concerts.
