About the Album
The Pulse - A Meditational Journey is an Indian slide guitar album of six solo tracks by Pandit Debasis Chakroborty of the Senia-Maihar Gharana, released on 15 March 2025. He is the senior-most disciple of Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra, and his playing reflects Kabra's style. Based in Agra and on the music faculty of Mangalayatan University, he has toured Australia, the USA and Europe. Here he turns the instrument's long glides and held notes to one end: music to sit still with.
Four tracks rest on named ragas. Raag Kirwani opens the set, a late-night raga whose notes match the Western harmonic minor. KalaSudha hears it as a raga of pure emotion. Charukesi, also written Charukeshi, follows: a late-morning raga from the Carnatic system with komal, or lowered, Dha and Ni. Bhairavi, an early-morning raga that musicians also play as the closing piece of a concert, takes the longest track at 9 minutes 16 seconds. Mishra Pilu brings the light, flexible character of thumri, with notes borrowed from outside the raga.
The last two tracks step outside a single raga. Journey through the Cloud draws on more than one raga. Thames - The Eternal Rhythm carries a Bengali folk melody, a Bhawaiya, to the river that runs through London. The six pieces run 33 minutes 6 seconds, and the titles state the intent: raga music shaped for meditation. It is a KalaSudha label release. The album streams on Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal and YouTube Music, and KalaSudha members stream live concerts and recordings on its own platform.
