About KalaSudha in Gwalior

Indian classical music in Gwalior has a school of khayal singing named after it. The Gwalior gharana took shape at the Scindia court in the late 18th and 19th centuries, and Bonnie C. Wade and others call it the oldest of the khayal gharanas, a place another gharana's family claims for its own line. Khayal is a form of Hindustani classical song.

In the Gwalior method the bandish, the set composition, governs the performance. The singer presents its two sections, sthayi and antara, and builds the raga from its structure, with an open, full-throated voice and a short alap. Before khayal, Gwalior was a centre of dhrupad under Raja Man Singh Tomar, who reigned from 1486 to 1516.

Learners in the gharana's city can study sitar or tabla on KalaSudha's online courses, and an award earned on a course names the tradition they studied in. Each level ends in a certificate or diploma. Once enough Gwalior learners sign up, KalaSudha brings workshops and summer camps here, and its concerts include the Kala Festival, a touring festival.
