About KalaSudha in Lucknow

Indian classical music in Lucknow gave tabla its open style. The Lucknow gharana of tabla formed when players of an earlier school settled in the city, a move the scholar James Kippen dates to the late 18th century. Its manner is the khula baj, the open style, with bold and resonant strokes. The Lucknow Observer calls it hatheli ka baj, the palm style.

Lucknow also shaped Kathak. The Lucknow gharana of Kathak took its court form in the mid-19th century under Wajid Ali Shah, the last nawab of Awadh. Katarzyna Skiba writes that its masters give more weight to bhav, feeling shown through gesture and mime.

Lucknow's tabla grew up beside Kathak: the city's dancers shaped its fixed compositions, which close on the first beat of the cycle. KalaSudha's online courses teach tabla, sitar and every other discipline, and a KalaSudha certificate or diploma closes each level. Festivals, venues and community groups anywhere in the world book KalaSudha programmes. KalaSudha also releases recordings and concert videos, and its concerts include the Kala Festival, a touring festival.
