About KalaSudha in Durham

An Indian Spring Colours concert, listed by GemArts and MUSICON for Sunday 11 May 2025, set Indian classical music in Durham inside the Department of Music on Palace Green. The morning honoured the singer Bhimsen Joshi with classical and devotional compositions from the Kirana gharana, the singing school associated with him. MUSICON describes the Indian Spring Colours concerts as presenting both Hindustani and Carnatic classical music.

Durham is on KalaSudha's planning list for concerts and workshops by top-class Indian classical musicians. Our Durham announcements will name the performers and the form of each programme, so a song recital and an instrumental afternoon are easy to tell apart. No background is needed to enjoy a concert, whether you study music or have never heard a raga.

Students and other singers can take Hindustani vocal lessons online with a live teacher at the KalaSudha academy. Top educationists vet each course, which its instructor builds with KalaSudha. A workshop in Durham depends on enough local interest and suitable arrangements, neither of which is settled, and no Durham date or venue is fixed. Press Register for updates to hear from us when that changes.

Why Durham

What sets KalaSudha apart in Durham

  • A Kirana gharana morning

Durham's 2025 tribute drew on compositions from the Kirana gharana, the school of Hindustani singing associated with Bhimsen Joshi. KalaSudha's Kirana gharana page traces the school and its singers.

  • Both traditions at Palace Green

MUSICON describes Indian Spring Colours as concerts of Hindustani and Carnatic music. KalaSudha's Durham programmes will say which of the two traditions each concert follows.

  • Sing with a live teacher

KalaSudha teaches Hindustani singing online with a live teacher, starting at Foundation level. A workshop in Durham depends on local interest, so registering helps us judge whether to hold one.
