About KalaSudha in Galway

Indian classical music in Galway was part of Culture Night on Friday 19 September 2025, when the Culture Night Galway listings carried Rhythms of India, a programme of dances and music. Earlier that year, the Hindu Society at the University of Galway and Spic Macay Ireland listed a Hindustani classical music masterclass for 6 April 2025. It was set for The Cube, in Áras na Mac Léinn, and promised thumri and khayal singing with tabla. In khayal, a word meaning imagination, the singer expands a short composition through improvisation within a raga, the melodic framework.

Galway is on KalaSudha's list for concerts and hands-on workshops with top-class Indian classical musicians. Every Galway listing from us will say whether you are booking a concert or a workshop, and who leads it.

You can start now: the KalaSudha academy teaches khayal and thumri online, in live one-to-one lessons with a vetted teacher. Every course is built by its instructor with KalaSudha and vetted by top educationists. A workshop in Galway itself needs enough interest and suitable arrangements, and nothing is booked. Why Galway

What sets KalaSudha apart in Galway

  • Thumri, the lighter song

Thumri is a semi-classical Hindustani genre of short love lyrics. The singer repeats one line many times, giving each return a new melodic shape and a new shade of feeling.

  • If dancers are on the bill

Indian classical dance is part of KalaSudha's work alongside the music. If a Galway programme includes dancers, its listing will name the dance form you will see.

  • Start with the murki

Thumri students at KalaSudha begin, at Foundation, with ornaments lighter and quicker than khayal's. One is the murki, a fast turn of a few notes.
