About KalaSudha in York

The guitar is one way into Indian classical music in York, as a 2019 Festival of Ideas concert showed. KalaSudha is planning concerts and workshops for York listeners who would like to explore the music further.

At the National Centre for Early Music, that programme brought Indian slide guitar together with a guitarist known for adapting West African music for six-string classical guitar. Solo repertoire came before the collaboration. Our invitation extends to anyone curious about hearing instruments used in different ways. If you already play guitar, you may be curious about its use in Indian music. First-time concertgoers are welcome too. KalaSudha plans performances by top-class musicians and opportunities to learn through workshops. The proposed York programme has no confirmed artists or venue, and a guitar performance is not yet scheduled.

Local workshops depend on enough interest and suitable arrangements. Meanwhile, our online courses provide structured study built by instructors with KalaSudha and vetted by top educationists. You can begin learning independently of a York event. Press Register for updates to hear how the local programme develops and when bookings become available.

Why York

What sets KalaSudha apart in York

  • An instrument in a different tradition

The 2019 Festival of Ideas included Indian slide guitar at the National Centre for Early Music. That past programme gives guitar listeners a local reference for exploring Indian classical performance.

  • Room for first-time listeners

You can come to the music through an instrument you play or through curiosity about live performance. KalaSudha's planned concerts welcome new listeners alongside people who already know the tradition.

  • Learning while plans develop

York workshops will need sufficient interest and local arrangements. You can explore structured online courses independently while following announcements about the proposed live programme and future opportunities to learn in person.
