Overview

## About the Harmonium course

**Harmonium lessons** online, prepared by KalaSudha, teach the Hindustani harmonium with a live teacher, from steady bellows and your first Sa to a judged concert. The course covers solo playing and **sangat**, accompanying a singer. Teachers based in India and abroad teach live online lessons worldwide, and you book them through KalaSudha on your teacher's calendar. Beginners need no music or keyboard background; if you have played before, a placement session finds your level.

The programme has three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. Your path in each module is 12 topics: eight core topics plus four open slots your teacher fills from electives, their own topics or both. The full path is **108 topics across nine modules**. How long it takes depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs. Your teacher closes a topic only when its check is met.

One hand works the bellows and the other plays, so steady bellows and clean key work come first. The keys cannot glide, and from Intermediate you learn the neighbouring notes and timed arrivals that suggest meend, the glide between swaras, on a keyboard. Gharana study goes through the singer you accompany, with studies of four vocal gayakis, or singing styles, at Advanced. Between lessons you record the practice task with the keyboard and the bellows hand in view, and your teacher gives feedback on the recording.

Musicians learn from each other as well as from a teacher. You hear how another learner plays the phrase you are working on, and you play for people who know what it takes. In a guru's class, students hear each other's riyaz, the daily practice, and accompanying other musicians is part of the training. A **[cohort](/en-fr/learn-indian-classical-music-in-a-group)** brings that into the course. The guided rehearsal and the review that close every module become a performance for the group.

One-to-one lessons are always available, and cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand. Teachers teach live in the language they set for the course. [Workshops and summer camps](/en-fr/indian-classical-music-workshops-and-summer-camps) come near you when enough learners sign up.

Each level ends with a reviewed presentation and leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma (see [certificates and diplomas](/en-fr/indian-classical-music-certificates)). [Register your interest](/en-fr/instrumental/hindustani-classical/harmonium/register-interest) to hear by email or WhatsApp when a cohort's dates and times are announced, or ask about one-to-one lessons in the Academy.

### What you will be able to do

- Keep the bellows steady and hold Sa for 10 seconds with no swell or dip.
- Play alankars with even fingering, and the komal and tivra swaras, to a tala cycle.
- Play the aroh, avaroh and pakad of a raga, then a first bandish melody.
- Suggest meend on the keys and follow a singer's bandish without leading.
- Keep a lehra for a tabla solo and accompany a khayal from vilambit to drut.
- Compose a lehra or gat, teach a Foundation topic and play a 30-minute concert.

### Before you start

- You need no previous music or keyboard experience to begin at Foundation.
- If you are returning after a break or trained elsewhere, a placement session checks your skills first.
- You need a harmonium your teacher approves, a drone reference or drone stops, a notebook and a device that records the keyboard.
- There is no minimum age: your teacher judges when a child is ready.
- Children learn through a parent's account, and a learner aged 13 or over can have their own login.

Levels

## The three harmonium levels

Each level has three modules and builds the skills the next one needs. You start with steady bellows, Sa and a first bandish melody. You finish with khayal accompaniment, a solo and a judged concert.

1. 01 Modules 1A–1C

    ### Foundation

      Ends in a KalaSudha certificate

Keep the bellows steady, find Sa and set the drone, then finger the middle octave evenly. Play alankars and sargam notation to the suggested Teentaal, Keherwa and Dadra. Learn two ragas, such as the suggested Yaman and Bhupali, with a first bandish melody and a short alap, then present a 4-minute set.

4 teacher-set slots Filled from 6 electives or your teacher’s own topics.

- ### Bellows and touch first

One hand works the bellows and the other plays. Steady bellows, the fingering your teacher sets and clean key work come before phrasing and speed.
- ### Feedback on every topic

Every topic asks for a practice recording that shows the keyboard and the bellows hand. Your teacher reviews it against the topic's completion check and sets the next correction.
- ### Solo and sangat

Learn to follow a singer, fill their pauses and keep a lehra for tabla. Solo playing starts at Intermediate and has its own module at Advanced.
- ### Learn alongside others

Join a cohort when one opens, or learn one-to-one. In a cohort the rehearsal and review topics become performances for fellow learners.

Questions

## Questions about the Harmonium course

Practical answers about starting, lessons and assessment.

### Is there a structured online harmonium course from beginner to advanced?

Yes. The Harmonium course prepared by KalaSudha runs online with a live teacher in three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. You learn solo playing and sangat, accompanying a singer, and sargam notation and tala theory run alongside playing.

Each level ends with a reviewed presentation and a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. Ask about the course in the [Academy](/en-fr/academy).

### Which gharana does the Harmonium course teach?

On the KalaSudha Harmonium course you study gharanas through the singers you accompany. The shared core names no gharana, and module 3A has accompaniment studies of four vocal gayakis, or singing styles: [Kirana](/en-fr/gharana/kirana-gharana), [Gwalior](/en-fr/gharana/gwalior-gharana), [Agra](/en-fr/gharana/agra-gharana) and Patiala.

A core topic asks you to learn one singer's gayaki and accompany 5 minutes of their recording. A teacher who accompanies singers of each gharana confirms that study.

### Can a harmonium teacher check my recordings, and how should I practise between lessons?

Yes. Your harmonium teacher reviews a practice recording on every topic against its completion check, then sets the next correction. You record the task with the keyboard and the bellows hand in view, and in live online lessons your teacher also listens to each phrase.

Between lessons you practise the task for the current topic and log the date, minutes, goal and tempo. How long you practise each day is agreed with your teacher.

### Should I learn the harmonium one-to-one or in a group?

One-to-one harmonium lessons are always available on the KalaSudha course, at your own pace, and you can take several lessons on one topic. Group cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand.

[Register your interest](/en-fr/instrumental/hindustani-classical/harmonium/register-interest) to hear by email or WhatsApp when a cohort's dates and times are announced. In a cohort you rehearse and present to the group, and your topics close on your own evidence.

### Does the Harmonium course teach solo playing or accompaniment?

Both. The Harmonium course prepared by KalaSudha teaches solo playing and sangat, accompanying a singer. Foundation builds bellows, touch, ragas and a first bandish melody, and Intermediate adds following a singer, lehra for tabla and first solo playing.

Advanced has a module for khayal accompaniment and a module for solo harmonium. The concert has 20 minutes of accompaniment and 10 of solo.

### How long does it take to learn the harmonium?

Learning the harmonium on the KalaSudha course typically takes 9–12 months for Foundation, 9–15 months for Intermediate and 12–30 months for Advanced.

The months are a guide you agree with your teacher. The pace depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs, and your teacher closes each topic only when its completion check is met.

### How much do online Indian classical music lessons cost?

Online Indian classical music lessons with KalaSudha cost from £30 / $30 an hour, set by each teacher. Each type of lesson a teacher gives can have its own price. You book and pay through KalaSudha and receive an invoice.

To ask what a teacher charges, visit the [Academy](/en-fr/academy), press Talk to an Advisor and tell us what you want to learn.

### How are students of online Indian classical music courses assessed?

On KalaSudha's online Indian classical music courses, teachers assess students topic by topic. Each topic credits named skills, and the teacher closes it only after reviewing the student's work. Foundation assessment uses practical work and spoken questions. Intermediate adds written theory, and Advanced adds theory papers and a judged stage performance. A module certificate follows each module, and KalaSudha issues an award at the end of each level.
