Overview

## About the Sitar course

The **sitar course online**, prepared by KalaSudha, takes you from your first Da and Ra strokes to an assessed recital. Teachers based in India and abroad teach live online lessons worldwide, and you book them through KalaSudha on your teacher's calendar. The programme has three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. Complete beginners start at Foundation; returning players join after a placement review.

Your path in each module is 12 topics: eight core topics plus four open slots your teacher fills from electives, their own topics or both. The full path is **108 topics across nine modules**. How long it takes depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs, because a topic closes only after your teacher reviews your evidence.

Raga theory runs alongside playing. You keep a record for every raga you study, with its grammar, pakad and diagnostic phrases. The shared core prescribes no gharana; electives open the Etawah / Imdadkhani, [Maihar](/en-fr/gharana/maihar-gharana), Jaipur Senia, Bishnupur and Indore Beenkar / Jafferkhani lines with material a practitioner approves.

Musicians learn from each other as well as from a teacher. You hear how another learner shapes the phrase you are working on, and you play for listeners who know the work. In a guru's class, students hear each other's riyaz and play to one another, and sangat with a tabla player is part of the training. A **[cohort](/en-fr/learn-indian-classical-music-in-a-group)** brings that into the course. The guided rehearsal and presentation that close every module become performances for the group, alongside the topics where you play with tabla.

One-to-one lessons are always available, and cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand. Teachers teach live in the language they set for the course. [Workshops and summer camps](/en-fr/indian-classical-music-workshops-and-summer-camps) come near you when enough learners sign up; to hear about workshops, register your interest on your city page by email or WhatsApp.

Each level leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. [Register your interest](/en-fr/instrumental/hindustani-classical/sitar/register-interest) to hear by email or WhatsApp when a cohort's dates and times are announced, or ask about one-to-one lessons in the Academy.

### What you will be able to do

- Set up the sitar with supported posture, check its tuning and play even Da-Ra strokes.
- Play paltas, meend and gamak with each pitch centre clear and the hand relaxed.
- Present prepared gats with clear mukhda returns, todas and taans over a tabla cycle.
- Develop alaap, jod and jhala into a continuous rendering of one raga.
- Recognise and explain the ragas you have studied through their pakad and diagnostic phrases.
- Compose and notate a gat, teach a Foundation topic and give an assessed recital.

### Before you start

- You need no previous music or sitar experience to begin at Foundation.
- You do not need to sing; singing or humming is used only to train your ear.
- If you are returning after a break or trained elsewhere, a placement review checks the earlier milestones.
- You need a sitar your teacher approves, a fitted mizrab and spare, a tuner and a recording device.
- There is no minimum age: your teacher judges when a child is ready.
- Children learn through a parent's account, and a learner aged 13 or over can have their own login.

8 core topics Every learner takes them, in order.

4 teacher-set slots Filled from 6 electives or your teacher’s own topics.

- ### Raga study with every gat

Each raga you learn gets a record of its grammar, pakad and diagnostic phrases. Your teacher tests recognition across the whole set at each level review.
- ### Feedback on your recordings

Practice tasks ask for a recording with both hands in view and the sitar clearly audible. Your teacher reviews it against the topic's finishing criterion.
- ### Tradition studies by choice

Listen and compare sitar traditions in the core. Electives in a chosen line open once a practitioner of that line approves the material.
- ### Learn alongside others

Join a cohort when one opens, or learn one-to-one. In a cohort the rehearsal and presentation topics become performances for fellow learners.

Questions

## Questions about the Sitar course

Practical answers about starting, lessons and assessment.

### Is there a structured online sitar course with levels from beginner to advanced?

Yes. The sitar course prepared by KalaSudha runs online in three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. You learn in live lessons one-to-one or in a cohort, and raga theory runs alongside playing: each raga you study gets a record of its grammar and phrases.

Each level leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. Ask about the course in the [Academy](/en-fr/academy).

### Should I learn the sitar in the Maihar, Imdadkhani or Senia style?

You do not need to choose a sitar style before you start with KalaSudha. The shared core prescribes no gharana's tuning, compositions or stroke order, and you compare traditions by ear as you go.

From Foundation, electives open the [Etawah](/en-fr/gharana/etawah-gharana) or Imdadkhani, [Maihar](/en-fr/gharana/maihar-gharana) and [Senia](/en-fr/gharana/senia-gharana) lines, among others, with a teacher who teaches that material. You can complete every award without a specialisation.

### Can a sitar teacher correct my technique over video, and how should I practise between lessons?

Yes. In live online lessons your sitar teacher watches your posture, the fit of your mizrab and both hands, then sets the next correction. Between lessons you practise the task set for the current topic and keep a daily practice record.

You record the practice task with both hands in view and the sitar clearly audible, and your teacher reviews it against the topic's finishing criterion. How long you practise is agreed with your teacher.

### Should I learn the sitar in a group class or one-to-one?

One-to-one sitar lessons are always available on the KalaSudha course, and you book as many lessons as a topic needs. Group cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand.

[Register your interest](/en-fr/instrumental/hindustani-classical/sitar/register-interest) to hear by email or WhatsApp when a batch's dates and times are announced. In a cohort you rehearse and present to the group, and your topics close on your own evidence.

### How long does it take to learn the sitar?

Learning the sitar on the KalaSudha course typically takes 9–12 months for Foundation, 9–15 months for Intermediate and 12–30 months for Advanced.

The months are a guide you agree with your teacher. The pace depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs, and a topic closes only after your teacher reviews your evidence.

### How much do online Indian classical music lessons cost?

Online Indian classical music lessons with KalaSudha cost from £30 / $30 an hour, set by each teacher. Each type of lesson a teacher gives can have its own price. You book and pay through KalaSudha and receive an invoice.

To ask what a teacher charges, visit the [Academy](/en-fr/academy), press Talk to an Advisor and tell us what you want to learn.

### How are students of online Indian classical music courses assessed?

On KalaSudha's online Indian classical music courses, teachers assess students topic by topic. Each topic credits named skills, and the teacher closes it only after reviewing the student's work. Foundation assessment uses practical work and spoken questions. Intermediate adds written theory, and Advanced adds theory papers and a judged stage performance. A module certificate follows each module, and KalaSudha issues an award at the end of each level.

### How do I find a good sitar teacher?

To find a good sitar teacher, or guru, look for one who can tell you who they learned from. From your first lesson, a good teacher checks your posture and the mizrab, the wire plectrum worn on the right index finger. On KalaSudha, each teacher's lineage is on their profile. Pick one yourself, or ask us to match you.

Lessons are live and online, from £30 / $30 an hour, set by each teacher. If you have played before, your teacher first reviews where you stand. Where enough learners sign up, we also bring workshops and summer camps near them. Our [courses](/en-fr/courses) include a sitar course in three levels.
