Overview

## About Foundation

**Foundation tabla** takes you from setting up the drums to a four-minute prepared set, with no music background needed. It is the first level of the tabla course prepared by KalaSudha, taught in live online lessons. You recite each phrase in padhant, the spoken bols, before you play it.

Module 1A covers setup and tuning the dayan to Sa. You then play clean open and closed bols on each drum, and Dha and Dhin with both hands. Module 1B teaches the cycle: sam, tali, khali and vibhag, the suggested Teentaal theka, Dadra and Keherwa, density changes and reading and writing bol notation.

  Read the full overviewShow less

Module 1C brings your first **kayda**, a theme you vary through paltas, then a tukra and a simple tihai that lands on sam. You hold theka under a lehra melody and hear six gharanas, such as [Delhi](/en-fr/gharana/delhi-gharana-tabla), through labelled excerpts. Relas and speed work come at Intermediate.

Each module has 14 topics, eight core and six electives, and your path is 12 of them. As a typical guide, Foundation takes 9–12 months, and you agree the pace with your teacher. In a cohort, you hear other learners recite and play the same phrases, and each guided rehearsal and review becomes a short performance for the group. Foundation leads to a KalaSudha award (see [certificates](/en-fr/indian-classical-music-certificates)). [Ask about Foundation in the Academy](/en-fr/academy).

### What you will be able to do

- Read and write a theka in bol notation with beat numbers and signs.
- Play a kayda theme, two paltas and a tukra whose tihai lands on sam.

Why Foundation

## What Foundation builds

- ### Padhant before playing

Recite every phrase before you play it. Your teacher hears whether the order of bols is secure before working on the strokes.
- ### Clean sound first

Tuning, open and closed strokes and two-hand bols come before speed. The checks listen for distinct sounds and even volume and watch for tension.
- ### A first kayda with its rules

Learn a kayda theme, vary it in paltas that keep its bols, and return to the theme on sam.

Questions

## Questions about Foundation

Entry, pace, assessment and what you show to finish the level.

### How do I read tabla bols and notation?

Tabla bols are the spoken syllables for each stroke, such as Na, Tin, Dha and Dhin, and Foundation tabla teaches you to say them before you play them. Module 1B shows bol notation with beat numbers and the signs for sam, tali and khali.

You read two cycles aloud and write one cycle of the main theka yourself.

### Which taals should a tabla beginner learn first?

Foundation tabla starts with Teentaal, the suggested main cycle, then adds Dadra and Keherwa, two shorter cycles. You mark each with hand gestures and play its theka.

Ektal and Jhaptal can be studied by hand as Foundation electives; you play them, and Rupak, at Intermediate. Your teacher confirms the talas before teaching.

### How do I learn kaydas on the tabla?

A first tabla kayda comes in module 1C of Foundation. You recite the theme your teacher chooses with a hand-count, play it, then develop two paltas, variations that keep the kayda's bols, and return to the theme on sam.

Relas come at Intermediate, where you play a rela phrase at two agreed tempos without losing a bol.

### How is the Foundation level of the tabla course assessed?

The Foundation level of the tabla course is assessed through playing, listening and oral questions. Your teacher closes each topic when its completion check is met, and the level ends with a four-minute set: the main theka, a kayda theme, two paltas and a short tukra or its closing tihai.

The melody-supported check, holding theka beneath a lehra, is compulsory and may happen outside the set, as may the recitation and pitch checks.
