## Event Details

On **Saturday 21 November** we bring Indian classical music to Bournemouth, at the [Palace Court Theatre](/en-fr/venue/palace-court-theatre) on Hinton Road. The theatre opened in 1931 as the town's playhouse, and Arts University Bournemouth is now bringing it back to the stage. Three musicians, and two ways of playing a raga on strings.

[Adnan Khan](/en-fr/artist/adnan-khan), a Grammy-nominated sitarist from Delhi, plays in the gayaki ang, which models sitar playing on the singing voice. His grandfather, the late Ustad Zafar Ahmed Khan, gave him his first lessons, and he trains with his father, the sitar player Ustad Saeed Khan.

[Vinay Desai](/en-fr/artist/vinay-desai) plays the **santoor**, the hundred-stringed instrument of Kashmir, as a direct disciple of Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. The sitar is plucked and slides between notes. The santoor is struck and cannot slide, so it moves in runs.

[Ustad Akram Khan](/en-fr/artist/akram-khan) plays tabla with both. The seventh generation of his family in the **Ajrada gharana**, he learned from his great-grandfather Ustad Mohammad Shafi Khan, then from Ustad Niazu Khan, and keeps more than fifteen of the gharana's kaydas in his teaching.

A Hundred Strings also plays [Oxford on 18 November](/en-fr/event/a-hundred-strings-in-oxford-two-strings-one-pulse), [Manchester on 20 November](/en-fr/event/a-hundred-strings-in-manchester-strings-of-kashmir-and-delhi) and [St Saviour's, Pimlico, the next evening, Sunday 22 November](/en-fr/event/a-hundred-strings-in-london-plucked-and-struck).

Seating is unallocated.

Doors open at 6:15 PM. Music starts at 6:30 PM.

Audience policy:

- Please do not film or take photographs without our permission.
- Please keep your phone away for the whole event, texting included.

Accessibility:

There are currently no lifts in the building, so accessibility is limited. There are three steps from the street to the theatre entrance, and a moveable ramp is available to use on these steps. Please [inform us](/en-fr/contact) in advance if you need to use it. The ramp is not suitable for motorised or electronic wheelchairs. Once inside, there is level access from the foyer to the auditorium. There are two wheelchair spaces, and seats with extra legroom are available on request. There is one accessible toilet, located in the foyer, and access to the main toilets is via a series of steps. Please tell the venue about any access needs in advance so it can plan accordingly.

## Frequently Asked Questions

What is KalaSudha's A Hundred Strings tour, who plays on it and where does it go?

**A Hundred Strings** is KalaSudha's tour of sitar, santoor and tabla. The name comes from the santoor, the hundred-stringed instrument of Kashmir.

The tour brings the sitar player Adnan Khan and the santoor player Vinay Desai together with the tabla player Ustad Akram Khan. In Manchester, Ustad Shahbaz Hussain also plays tabla. The sitar is plucked and slides between notes; the santoor is struck and cannot slide, so it moves in runs.

The tour plays [Oxford](/en-fr/event/a-hundred-strings-in-oxford-two-strings-one-pulse), [Manchester](/en-fr/event/a-hundred-strings-in-manchester-strings-of-kashmir-and-delhi), [Bournemouth](/en-fr/event/a-hundred-strings-in-bournemouth-ragas-by-the-sea) and London.

What is the address of the Palace Court Theatre in Bournemouth, which car parks are close by, and which bus stop serves it?

The [Palace Court Theatre](/en-fr/venue/palace-court-theatre) is on **Hinton Road, Bournemouth BH1 2EN**, in the town centre. Its what3words address is **steep.turns.keep**.

Westover Gardens and Central car parks are within 200 m. The Hinton Road Top bus stop is directly opposite.

The entrance has three steps and a moveable ramp. For access needs, [contact us before the day](/en-fr/faq/access-travel/i-have-access-needs-who-do-i-talk-to).

Is the Palace Court Theatre in Bournemouth accessible for wheelchair users and people with access needs, and who should I tell before I come?

Partly. The [Palace Court Theatre](/en-fr/venue/palace-court-theatre) has three steps from the street to the entrance, with a **moveable ramp**, and **level access** from the foyer to the auditorium. There are two wheelchair spaces and seats with extra legroom.

One **accessible toilet** sits in the foyer. Stairs lead to the other toilets, and the building has **no lift**.

Tell the venue about access needs in advance, at <palacecourttheatre@aub.ac.uk>, so it can plan evacuation. For a KalaSudha concert, email <contact@kalasudha.com> before booking (see [who to talk to about access needs](/en-fr/faq/access-travel/i-have-access-needs-who-do-i-talk-to)).

Where in Bournemouth can I hear live Indian classical music, and which KalaSudha concerts take place there?

KalaSudha presents Indian classical music in Bournemouth at the [Palace Court Theatre](/en-fr/venue/palace-court-theatre) on Hinton Road. The [Bournemouth page](/en-fr/place/bournemouth) lists each KalaSudha concert in the town with its **Book Tickets** button, and you can press **Register for updates** there to hear about new dates.

The theatre is a 1931 Art Deco playhouse, and Arts University Bournemouth is restoring it. For buses and parking, see [getting to the Palace Court Theatre](/en-fr/faq/access-travel/how-do-i-get-to-the-palace-court-theatre-in-bournemouth-and-where-do-i-park).

Who is the sitar player Adnan Khan, who taught him, and what is distinctive about his playing?

[**Adnan Khan**](/en-fr/artist/adnan-khan) is a Grammy-nominated [sitar](/en-fr/instrument/sitar) player from Delhi who works in the **gayaki ang**, the approach that shapes the instrument after the singing voice. He took his first lessons from his maternal grandfather, the late Zafar Ahmed Khan, and trains with his father, the sitar player Saeed Khan. His uncle, the khayal singer Mashkoor Ali Khan, taught him the gayaki ang at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata. Melody leads in his playing, and a raga's notes keep their shape through his fastest runs.

Who is the santoor player Vinay Desai, who taught him, and how does he play?

[**Vinay Desai**](/en-fr/artist/vinay-desai) plays the [santoor](/en-fr/instrument/santoor), the hundred-stringed instrument of Kashmir, struck with two light curved mallets. He studied with Shivkumar Sharma, who received the Padma Vibhushan, through Sharma's final years. A struck string cannot bend, so his expression comes from where the strokes fall and how they are spaced. His concerts open slow, with no beat at all, until the raga has a shape. Then the **tabla** comes in, and the close is fast.

How do the sitar and the santoor differ in how they are built, how they are played and how they sound?

The **sitar** is plucked and slides between notes. The **santoor** is struck and cannot slide, so it moves in runs and repeated strokes.

The sitar is a long-necked lute with a gourd body, movable curved frets and sympathetic strings beneath the playing strings. The santoor is the hundred-stringed instrument of Kashmir: a flat wooden box strung with metal strings, struck with a pair of light wooden mallets.

On the sitar you hear a phrase held and bent, the way a singer does. On the santoor each note rings on after the hand has moved. See [what is a sitar](/en-fr/faq/instruments-artforms/what-is-a-sitar) and [what is a santoor](/en-fr/faq/instruments-artforms/what-is-a-santoor).

What is the Ajrara (Ajrada) gharana of tabla, where did it begin, and what is it known for?

The [**Ajrara gharana**](/en-fr/gharana/ajrara-gharana), also spelt Ajrada, is a school of [tabla](/en-fr/instrumental/hindustani-classical/tabla) that arose in the late 18th or early 19th century in the village of Ajrara, in Meerut district. Most accounts trace it to two brothers, Kallu Khan and Miru Khan, who learnt in Delhi, making it an offshoot of the Delhi gharana. Its players add the ring finger to the Delhi technique. It is best known for qaidas, themes with set variations, in **aad laya**, three strokes to every two beats. [Ustad Akram Khan](/en-fr/artist/akram-khan) plays in the gharana today.

How do I get my ticket?

When you book on kalasudha.com, your KalaSudha confirmation email carries your ticket. Show it on your phone at the door, or bring a printout if you prefer paper.

If the email has not arrived, check your spam folder first. If it is still missing, write to <contact@kalasudha.com> and we will send your ticket again.

Can no longer come? See [refunds](/en-fr/faq/tickets-booking/i-can-no-longer-attend-can-i-have-a-refund). Event moved or cancelled? See [cancellations and date changes](/en-fr/faq/tickets-booking/what-happens-if-the-event-is-cancelled-or-moved-to-another-date). Planning the night? See [when to arrive](/en-fr/faq/at-the-concert/when-should-i-arrive).

   When should I arrive?

Arrive at the door time shown on the KalaSudha event page. Doors open before the music starts, so you can find a seat and settle before the first note. All times are UK local time.

When the programme opens with a raga, the first section is the **alap**, the slow, free-tempo opening of the raga. Arriving after the start time means walking in during it.

For seating, see [Is seating allocated?](/en-fr/faq/at-the-concert/is-seating-allocated) If this is your first Indian classical concert, read [what to expect as a newcomer](/en-fr/faq/at-the-concert/i-have-never-been-to-an-indian-classical-concert-will-i-follow-it).
