## Event Details

Echoes of Tradition is an evening of Indian classical music in London, at The Bhavan on Friday 12 September 2025, as part of Kala Festival 2025. **[Pandit Debasis Chakroborty](/en-fr/artist/debasis-chakroborty)** plays **Indian slide guitar** in the first set, with the tabla player **[Hanif Khan](/en-fr/artist/hanif-khan)**. The second set is a **tabla duet** with **[Ustad Akram Khan](/en-fr/artist/akram-khan)**, and **[Satwinder Pal Singh](/en-fr/artist/satwinder-pal-singh)** plays the sarangi, a bowed string instrument, with them. Doors open at 6pm, and the music runs from 6.30pm to 9pm.

Pandit Debasis Chakroborty belongs to the Senia-Maihar Gharana. A gharana is a school of playing that teachers pass on to their students. On his slide guitar each note hangs in the air a little longer than you expect. The instrument asks patience of him as much as technique.

Hanif Khan is a London tabla player with a singing bayan, the bass drum of the tabla pair, and a steady sense of laya, or tempo. He lets the long notes breathe before he moves the music on, so his accompaniment feels like a duet.

Ustad Akram Khan comes from the Ajrara Gharana. His playing pairs precision with explosive invention, and whisper-soft passages give way to thunderous cascades. Satwinder Pal Singh, from the UK, joins on sarangi. Book your seats on this page.

Where can I hear live Indian classical music in London, and which venues does KalaSudha use?

You can hear Hindustani (North Indian) classical music live in London at London Ragas, KalaSudha's concert series in London. Its evenings are [baithaks](/en-fr/faq/at-the-concert/what-is-a-baithak): the audience sits close to the musicians. London Ragas can take place at different venues across London, and KalaSudha plans to add more baithaks in other parts of London. KalaSudha is based in London, so every concert tour it organises also plays London once.

See [how to book tickets for a London concert](/en-fr/faq/how-do-i-book-tickets-for-kalasudhas-indian-classical-concerts-in-london) and [how to get to the venues](/en-fr/faq/how-do-i-get-to-kalasudhas-concert-venues-in-london).

Who is the tabla player Ustad Akram Khan, and what is his lineage?

[**Ustad Akram Khan**](/en-fr/artist/akram-khan) is a [tabla](/en-fr/instrument/tabla) player and the seventh generation of his family in the [Ajrara gharana](/en-fr/gharana/ajrara-gharana). His father was Hashmat Ali Khan. As a boy he trained first with his great-grandfather, Mohammad Shafi Khan, and later with Niazu Khan. For over four decades he has kept the gharana's repertoire alive, and he preserves more than 15 of its classic qaidas through his teaching and concerts. He made his international debut in Norway in 1987 and has played on All India Radio more than 800 times.

Who is the Indian slide guitarist Pandit Debasis Chakroborty, the senior-most disciple of Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra?

[**Pandit Debasis Chakroborty**](/en-fr/artist/debasis-chakroborty) is a Hindustani slide guitarist and the senior-most disciple of [Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra](/en-fr/legendary-masters/brij-bhushan-kabra), and his playing reflects Kabra's style. His name is also written Debasis Chakraborty. He plays in the [Senia-Maihar gharana](/en-fr/gharana/senia-maihar-gharana) and has taught since 1992.

He has been part of the Department of Performing Arts at Mangalayatan University since its inception, and returns to universities in Australia and the USA as a conductor-performer and artist-in-residence. He helped carry out a joint music research project between Mangalayatan University and Monash University, and has published 10 research papers.

   What is a tabla?

A [**tabla**](/en-fr/instrument/tabla) is a pair of hand drums. The smaller drum, the **dayan**, is wooden, sits under the right hand and carries the pitch. The larger drum, the **bayan**, sits under the left hand and gives the bass. The bayan is most often copper, sometimes clay or wood, and the player bends its bass by pressing the heel of the palm into the head while striking.

Each head carries a black circle of **tuning paste**. The paste weights the skin and adds overtones. The dayan rings at a clear pitch, and the bayan gives a deep bass with a looser pitch that the palm can shift.

What is the Ajrara (Ajrada) gharana of tabla, where did it begin, and what is it known for?

The [**Ajrara gharana**](/en-fr/gharana/ajrara-gharana), also spelt Ajrada, is a school of [tabla](/en-fr/instrumental/hindustani-classical/tabla) that arose in the late 18th or early 19th century in the village of Ajrara, in Meerut district. Most accounts trace it to two brothers, Kallu Khan and Miru Khan, who learnt in Delhi, making it an offshoot of the Delhi gharana. Its players add the ring finger to the Delhi technique. It is best known for qaidas, themes with set variations, in **aad laya**, three strokes to every two beats. [Ustad Akram Khan](/en-fr/artist/akram-khan) plays in the gharana today.
