About the course

## About this course

The **pakhawaj course online**, prepared by KalaSudha, teaches the two-headed drum of Dhrupad from your first clear bols to a thirty-minute solo and live accompaniment. Teachers based in India and abroad teach live online lessons worldwide, and you book them through KalaSudha on your teacher's calendar. The programme has three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. Complete beginners start at Foundation; percussionists from other drums join after a placement.

Your path in each module is 12 topics: eight core topics plus four your teacher selects. The full path is **108 topics across nine modules**. How long it takes depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs, because a topic closes only after your teacher reviews your evidence.

You play two roles. As a soloist you build thekas, uthans, parans, relas and tihais in cycles such as the suggested Chautal and Sultal. As an accompanist you follow a [Dhrupad](/en-gb/vocal/hindustani-classical/dhrupad) partner from Foundation, and Dhamar from Intermediate. Between lessons you record the practice task with both hands in view, and your teacher reviews it.

The **shared core** prescribes no bol spelling, hand assignment or recital order. After Foundation you can choose a primary stream: the Nana Panse, Nathdwara or Kudau Singh line, the Awadh/Ayodhya context or the Banaras teaching line. If you change teacher, your evidenced common credit stays on your record.

Musicians learn from each other as well as from a teacher. You hear how another learner plays the phrase you are working on, and you play for listeners who know what it takes. In a guru's class, students hear each other's riyaz and play sangat for one another. A **cohort** brings that into the course. The guided rehearsal and presentation that close every module become performances for the group, alongside the live cue exchanges and partner work at every level.

One-to-one lessons are always available, and cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand. Teachers teach live in the language they set for the course. To hear about [workshops](/en-gb/indian-classical-music-workshops-and-summer-camps) near you, register your interest on your city page by email or WhatsApp. Each level leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. [Register your interest](/en-gb/instrumental/hindustani-classical/pakhawaj/register-interest) to hear by email or WhatsApp when a cohort's dates and times are announced.

Your learning journey

## The three pakhawaj levels

Each level has three modules and adds cycles, repertoire and accompaniment. You start with sound, padhant and two cycles, and finish with a thirty-minute solo, live accompaniment, composition and supervised teaching.

- ### Foundation

Set up and tune with support, produce open and closed sounds and recite before playing. Learn the suggested Chautal and Sultal, an uthan, three parans and a simple tihai, then accompany a Dhrupad partner and present a six-minute solo.
- ### Intermediate

Add the suggested Tevra and Dhamar, relas with paltas, six parans including a chakradar and a stuti paran, and 3:2 layakari. Accompany Dhrupad and Dhamar live, compare schools and sources, and present a fifteen-minute solo.
- ### Advanced

Develop six thekas and three detailed solo cycles, fractional layakari and multi-cycle tihais. Transcribe, compose a paran, teach a Foundation topic, explain tala theory with sources, and present a thirty-minute solo with live accompaniment.

## What sets it apart

- ### Soloist and accompanist

Every level assesses both roles: a continuous solo and Dhrupad accompaniment, with Dhamar added from Intermediate. The cue exchanges always need a live partner.
- ### Feedback on your recordings

Practice tasks ask for a recording with both hands in view and clear sound. Your teacher reviews it against the topic's finishing line and sets the next correction.
- ### Streams after Foundation

Choose a primary stream after Foundation, with attributed material your teacher supplies. You can complete the general award without one.
- ### Placement for other percussionists

Tabla or other drum experience is welcome, but placement tests the actual module outcomes, including pakhawaj sound production.

## Prerequisites

- You need no previous music or pakhawaj experience to begin at Foundation.
- If you are returning after a break or play another drum, a placement tests the module outcomes.
- You need a serviceable pakhawaj, supported seating, approved tuning tools, a reference pitch and a recording device.
- There is no minimum age: your teacher judges when a child is ready.
- Children learn through a parent's account, and a learner aged 13 or over can have their own login.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a structured online pakhawaj course with levels from beginner to advanced?

Yes. The pakhawaj course prepared by KalaSudha runs online in three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. You learn in live lessons with a teacher, building solo repertoire and Dhrupad and Dhamar accompaniment.

Each level leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. Ask about the course in the [Academy](/en-gb/academy).

Which pakhawaj gharana or parampara should a beginner learn?

A beginner on the KalaSudha pakhawaj course does not choose a parampara first. Foundation is common to all learners, with valid teacher methods and no universal bol spelling or hand assignment.

After Foundation you can choose a primary stream: the Nana Panse, Nathdwara or Kudau Singh line, the Awadh/Ayodhya context or the Banaras teaching line. A general award needs no stream.

What is the difference between learning the tabla and the pakhawaj?

On KalaSudha's courses, pakhawaj learners work towards Dhrupad and Dhamar accompaniment in cycles such as the suggested Chautal and Sultal, while tabla learners start from Teentaal. Both courses share padhant, theka, tihai and the same skill framework.

See the [pakhawaj](/en-gb/instrument/pakhawaj) and [tabla](/en-gb/instrument/tabla) pages for the instruments themselves.

Can a pakhawaj teacher check my technique and recordings, and how should I practise between lessons?

Yes. In live online lessons your pakhawaj teacher watches both hands and listens to the open and closed sounds, then sets the next correction. Between lessons you practise the task set for the current topic, reciting each phrase in padhant before you play it, and record it with both hands in view and clear sound.

Your teacher reviews the recording against the topic's finishing line. How long you practise is agreed with your teacher, and you record what you actually do. Faster or louder playing alone does not count as progress; clarity and placement do.

Should I learn the pakhawaj in a group class or one-to-one?

One-to-one pakhawaj lessons are always available on the KalaSudha course, and your teacher can add or replace selected topics for you. Group cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand.

[Register your interest](/en-gb/instrumental/hindustani-classical/pakhawaj/register-interest) to hear by email or WhatsApp when a batch's dates and times are announced. In a cohort the teacher adapts the path for the group, and all core capabilities stay compulsory.

How are students of online Indian classical music courses assessed?

On KalaSudha's online Indian classical music courses, teachers assess students topic by topic. Each topic credits named skills, and the teacher closes it only after reviewing the student's work. Foundation assessment uses practical work and spoken questions. Intermediate adds written theory, and Advanced adds theory papers and a judged stage performance. A module certificate follows each module, and KalaSudha issues an award at the end of each level.
