## About this course

12–30 months

**Advanced sitar** prepares a full raga rendering and a recital of at least thirty minutes, with composition and supervised teaching alongside. You enter after Intermediate or a placement review against its milestones. It is the third level of the sitar course prepared by KalaSudha.

Module 3A sustains raga development. You transcribe from a complete rendition, plan a ten-minute alaap and choose andolan, murki and krintan where the raga allows. You then pair a slow and a faster gat with six taans and build an alaap-jod-jhala arc. The module closes with a twenty-minute study.

Module 3B makes rhythm and style explicit: sapat and gamak taans at a clear speed, a three-cycle tihai, a counted cross-rhythm and a concert study in Ektal or Jhaptal. You compare five traditions with timestamps and lead sawal-jawab, a phrase exchange, with tabla.

Module 3C assembles **fifteen studied ragas**, six practical studies, a composed gat and a twenty-minute Foundation lesson you teach under supervision. In a cohort, you rehearse the recital in front of fellow learners before the assessed performance. Your teacher and a second qualified assessor review the recital and a live viva, and the level leads to a KalaSudha award. [Ask about Advanced in the Academy](/en-gb/academy).

Your learning journey

## The three Advanced modules

Advanced moves from sustained raga development to explicit rhythm and style, then to the recital. Composition and supervised teaching stay compulsory for every learner.

- ### Module 3A: complete raga development

Analyse and transcribe a complete rendition, plan a ten-minute alaap and choose ornaments the raga allows. Pair a slow and a faster gat with six taans. Build the alaap-jod-jhala arc and present a twenty-minute study with tabla.
- ### Module 3B: advanced technique, rhythm and style

Play sapat and gamak taans with every swara audible. Construct a three-cycle tihai and a counted cross-rhythm, and develop a concert study in Ektal or Jhaptal. Compare five traditions and lead sawal-jawab with tabla.
- ### Module 3C: the performer, composer and teacher

Keep a four-week preparation log and complete a thirty-minute run. Organise fifteen raga records and six practical studies, compose a gat and teach a Foundation topic. Prepare sound and cues, then give the recital and viva.

- ### A raga at full length

Plan and sustain twenty minutes of coherent development, from alaap through jod and jhala to paired gats, without losing the raga's identity.
- ### Rhythm and style made explicit

Construct long tihais and cross-rhythms, play a concert study outside Teentaal and explain the influences in your own playing with timestamped evidence.
- ### Composer, teacher, performer

Compose and notate a gat, teach a Foundation topic under supervision, then present a recital and viva to two assessors.

## Before you begin

- Complete Intermediate sitar or meet its milestones in a placement review with your teacher.
- Be able to play a Masitkhani and a Razakhani gat, jod with basic jhala, and recognise eight studied ragas.

## Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare for my first sitar performance?

Preparation for a first sitar recital runs through Advanced. Module 3C asks for a four-week preparation log with rest and recording review and a thirty-minute run without a persistent tension fault.

You prepare sound, introductions and cues for your tabla player, rehearse the full recital, then perform at least thirty minutes and answer a live viva.

What should I be able to play before Advanced sitar?

Advanced sitar starts after Intermediate or a placement review against its milestones. You should play a slow Masitkhani and a faster Razakhani gat with todas, jod with basic jhala, a counted tihai and a gat outside Teentaal.

You should also recognise eight studied ragas and present a ten- to fifteen-minute set.

How is the Advanced level of the sitar course assessed?

The Advanced level of the sitar course ends with a recital of at least thirty minutes on one principal raga, live or continuously recorded with both hands visible, followed by a live viva. Your teacher and a second qualified assessor both sign off each milestone.

You also submit six practical studies, a transcription, a composed gat and a twenty-minute supervised lesson with its plan, observed correction and revision.

Do I learn to teach the sitar at Advanced level?

Yes. Advanced sitar includes one Foundation topic that you plan and teach for twenty minutes under supervision. You diagnose a learner's error and revise your plan after feedback.

The lesson plan, the observed correction and your revision count as compulsory Advanced evidence, with or without style electives.
