# What is a tarshehnai?

 Updated 19 October 2026

A tarshehnai is an **[esraj](/en-gb/instrument/esraj)** fitted with a mechanical horn. Beneath the horn is the same instrument: a bowed lute with frets, sympathetic strings and a goatskin soundtable over a waisted wooden body. Museum esrajes carry four bowed main strings and 15 sympathetic strings.
