# What should I check before buying a taus?

Before buying a **[taus](/en-gb/instrument/taus)**, compare it with documented instruments. Museum examples have metal frets, four main strings and about 15 sympathetic strings, and a wooden resonator covered with skin. They measure about 97 to 118 cm overall, and the bridge on the Edinburgh example is curved ivory.
