What is the Farrukhabad gharana?

Updated

The Farrukhabad gharana is a school of North Indian tabla that took shape in the 18th or 19th century around Haji Vilayat Ali Khan, a disciple of Bakshu Khan of the Lucknow gharana. It takes its name from the town of Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. Players strike both the rim and the middle of the right drumhead, so open, resonant strokes meet the closed strokes of Delhi. Gats, fixed compositions, sit at the centre of its repertoire. Among KalaSudha's artists, Durjay Bhaumik plays in the gharana.
