About KalaSudha in Delhi
Two gharanas, or schools, of Indian classical music in Delhi carry the city's name: one of khayal, a leading form of Hindustani classical singing, and one of tabla. The Delhi gharana of khayal is documented from the 19th century. Its hallmark is the variety of its taans, fast runs of notes.
The Delhi tabla gharana began with Siddhar Khan Dhadhi in the first half of the 18th century, by the account of the historian Aneesh Pradhan. Delhi players call their style kinar baj, the rim style, because the main right-hand stroke falls on the rim of the drum. Many phrases need only the index and middle fingers, which gives the style its other name, the two-finger style.
Learners of the two-finger style can start tabla at Foundation on KalaSudha's online courses, and Kathak sits beside it among every other discipline. Each level ends in a KalaSudha certificate or diploma. When enough learners in Delhi sign up, workshops and summer camps follow in the city. For a wedding, a private party or a corporate evening, KalaSudha provides musicians anywhere in the world. It also presents its own concerts, the Kala Festival among them, a touring festival, and releases recordings and concert videos.
