The tavil is a two-headed barrel drum of South India, its shell carved from a single log of jackwood, and it accompanies the nadaswaram in temple, festival, folk and concert music. A second nadaswaram and a second tavil often join, and Krishnaswami describes the tavil as ideally suited to open-air performance. Tavil and nadaswaram lead the **periya melam**, the big ensemble, completed by the ottu, a drone pipe, and the talam, bell-metal cymbals that keep time. The ensemble plays at weddings, in temple ritual and in processions honouring temple deities. Tabla and Kathak learners in Tirunelveli can take KalaSudha's [online courses](/en-int/courses), which cover every other discipline as well.
