## Event Details

[**Pandit Ajay Prasanna**](/en-lk/artist/ajay-prasanna) teaches in London on **Wednesday 19 August**, the evening before he plays our [London Ragas](/event/london-ragas-breath-sound-pandit-ajay-prasanna) concert at the same venue. Four Grammy nominations, the Global Indian Music Award, a bansuri on the Gorillaz album *Parvat (The Mountain)*, and a diary that leaves little room for teaching. He has made room for three hours here.

He carries the **Banaras Gharana** flute lineage of his father, **Pandit Bholanath Prasanna**, whose students include Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. That is the tradition you will sit in front of at **The Tate Institute**: bamboo, six holes, and a way of shaping breath into a raga handed down inside one family for three generations.

#### Open to everyone in the room

Children from around eight, adults who have never held an instrument, students mid-grade, and players with years behind them all sit together. This is how a baithak works: the beginner and the advanced player hear the same teaching and each takes what they can use. Bring your instrument if you have one, on any instrument at all. Bansuri, sitar, sarod, violin, guitar, piano, or voice: the material rests on musical ideas rather than one instrument's mechanics. No instrument and no experience needed to take part.

Parents, bring your children and sit with them rather than dropping them off. Plenty of parents who came to supervise end up playing.

#### What the evening covers

Pandit Prasanna opens with a short recital, then teaches for the rest of the evening.

- **Breath and swara**: how breath becomes tone on a bamboo flute, how the notes sit under the ear, and why a raga is more than a scale
- **The alap**: how a raga opens in free time, and what to listen for while it does
- **Phrasing**: meend, the glide joining two notes without restriking, and kan, the grace note that gives a phrase its accent
- **Rhythm**: the taal cycle underneath, finding the sam, and landing a phrase back on it

He hears participants play and gives one-to-one feedback before the close, and takes questions on technique, riyaz discipline and the tradition itself.

#### Included with every ticket

- Small-group teaching from a Banaras Gharana pandit
- One-to-one feedback on your playing
- Open Q&A on technique, practice and tradition
- Refreshments and drinks
- Certificate of participation
- Access to the KalaSudha learning community, with our music-focused calling system, notation tools and courses to continue with

#### Tickets

£40 for adults and £30 for students, until 6:00 PM on 12 August. After that the price rises to £50 and £35. The room holds thirty, so book early on both counts.

*Wednesday 19 August 2026, 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Doors 5:30 PM. The Tate Institute, 1 Wythes Road, London E16 2DN.*

## Frequently Asked Questions

 Where is The Tate Institute?

The Tate Institute is at **1 Wythes Road, Silvertown, London E16 2DN**, in East London.

Henry Tate paid for the building in 1887 as a social club for workers at the **Tate Sugar Refinery**. Newham Council owns the building. **ReSpace Projects** holds a 25-year lease and got the keys in March 2024. ReSpace is restoring it as a community venue, and the building hosts events as parts of it reopen.

For travel, see [how to get to our London venues](/en-lk/faq/how-do-i-get-to-kalasudhas-concert-venues-in-london). For other concerts in the city, see [where to hear Indian classical music live in London](/en-lk/faq/where-can-i-hear-indian-classical-music-live-in-london).

Where can I hear live Indian classical music in London, and which venues does KalaSudha use?

You can hear Hindustani (North Indian) classical music live in London at London Ragas, KalaSudha's concert series in London. Its evenings are [baithaks](/en-lk/faq/at-the-concert/what-is-a-baithak): the audience sits close to the musicians. London Ragas can take place at different venues across London, and KalaSudha plans to add more baithaks in other parts of London. KalaSudha is based in London, so every concert tour it organises also plays London once.

Who is the flautist Pandit Ajay Prasanna, and what is his musical lineage?

[**Pandit Ajay Prasanna**](/en-lk/artist/ajay-prasanna) is a [flute](/en-lk/instrument/flute) player from a musical family. He carries forward the legacy of his father, Bholanath Prasanna, a flute master whose students include Hariprasad Chaurasia. He plays in the style of the Banaras gharana. He has performed across India and abroad, including at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and at festivals in Asia and Europe. His honours include Grammy nominations, the Global Indian Music Award for his album Cinema, the Sangeet Ratna Award and the Surmani Award.

What is a bansuri, how is it made, and how is it played?

A [**bansuri**](/en-lk/instrument/flute) is a transverse flute cut from a single length of seasoned bamboo. It has no keys and no moving parts, only six finger holes, or seven in Pannalal Ghosh's style. The maker burns or drills the blow hole and the finger holes. The player controls pitch through the lips at the blow hole, breath pressure and **half-holing**, covering a finger hole in part, which gives the slides and bends of a raga. Until the 1940s it was not thought a concert instrument; Pannalal Ghosh made a larger [bansuri](/en-lk/instrumental/hindustani-classical/bansuri-flute) for the classical stage.
