About Foundation

Foundation tabla takes you from setting up the drums to a four-minute prepared set, with no music background needed. It is the first level of the tabla course prepared by KalaSudha, taught in live online lessons. You recite each phrase in padhant, the spoken bols, before you play it.

Module 1A covers setup and tuning the dayan to Sa. You then play clean open and closed bols on each drum, and Dha and Dhin with both hands. Module 1B teaches the cycle: sam, tali, khali and vibhag, the suggested Teentaal theka, Dadra and Keherwa, density changes and reading and writing bol notation.

Module 1C brings your first kayda, a theme you vary through paltas, then a tukra and a simple tihai that lands on sam. You hold theka under a lehra melody and hear six gharanas, such as Delhi, through labelled excerpts. Relas and speed work come at Intermediate.

Each module has 14 topics, eight core and six electives, and your path is 12 of them. As a typical guide, Foundation takes 9–12 months, and you agree the pace with your teacher. In a cohort, you hear other learners recite and play the same phrases, and each guided rehearsal and review becomes a short performance for the group. Foundation leads to a KalaSudha award (see certificates). Ask about Foundation in the Academy.

Modules

The three Foundation modules

Foundation starts with sound, then the cycle, then your first repertoire. Each module ends with a guided rehearsal and a review, and the last one closes with a four-minute prepared set.

    1. Setup and a Practice RecordCœur

Seat both drums and position your body without strain, then start a practice log.

    2. Tune to Sa and Hear Sa-PaCœur

Match the dayan to a supplied Sa and sing Sa and Pa against a reference.

    3. Right-Hand Open and Closed BolsCœur

Play Na, Tin, Tun and closed strokes using the fingering your teacher demonstrates.

    4. Bayan Resonance and ClosureCœur

  2. 1B

Module 1B: Theka, cycle and notation

    8 core + 4 teacher-setfrom 14 topics

Mark sam, tali, khali and vibhag with hand gestures. Hold the suggested Teentaal theka, then Dadra and Keherwa. Recite in ekgun and dugun, single and double density, and read and write a theka in bol notation.

    8 core + 4 teacher-setfrom 14 topics

Recite and play a kayda theme, develop two paltas and return to the theme. Learn a tukra whose tihai lands on sam and hold theka beneath a lehra. Hear six tabla gharanas through labelled excerpts, then present a four-minute set.
    1. Review the Foundation ThekasCœur

Use your log to correct one weak theka before joining it to repertoire.

Why Foundation

What Foundation builds

  • Padhant before playing

Recite every phrase before you play it. Your teacher hears whether the order of bols is secure before working on the strokes.
  • Clean sound first

Tuning, open and closed strokes and two-hand bols come before speed. The checks listen for distinct sounds and even volume and watch for tension.
  • A first kayda with its rules

Learn a kayda theme, vary it in paltas that keep its bols, and return to the theme on sam.
