About Foundation
Foundation pakhawaj takes you from setting up the drum to a six-minute solo and your first Dhrupad accompaniment, with no music background needed. It is the first level of the pakhawaj course prepared by KalaSudha, taught in live online lessons. You recite each phrase in padhant before you play it.
Module 1A covers setup, tuning the treble head against a reference, supervised bass preparation and open and closed sounds for each hand, then combined bols, padhant and the cycle. Module 1B teaches two cycles, the suggested Chautal and Sultal, theka variation, an uthan, three short parans and a simple tihai, with bol notation and dugun.

Module 1C joins the music. You recognise Sa, Pa and upper Sa and one accompaniment raga, hear how a Dhrupad mukhda returns and hold theka under a Dhrupad partner for three minutes. You then connect theka, variations, uthan, parans and tihai into a six-minute solo.
Each module has 14 topics, eight core and six electives, and your path is 12 of them. As a typical guide, Foundation takes 9–12 months, and you agree the pace with your teacher. In a cohort, you play the module rehearsal and the six-minute solo for fellow learners before your teacher's review. Foundation leads to a KalaSudha award (see certificates). Questions about Foundation
Entry, pace, assessment and what you show to finish the level.
Pakhawaj parans start in module 1B of Foundation. You recite each paran in padhant, then play it with clear bols and the correct start and ending. Foundation asks for three short parans and an uthan in the principal cycle.
Intermediate builds to six parans, including a chakradar and a stuti paran.
Foundation pakhawaj starts with two contrasting cycles, suggested Chautal and Sultal, learnt through gestures, notation and theka. Chautal is the suggested first detailed solo cycle.
Intermediate adds the suggested Tevra and Dhamar, and Advanced adds Rudra and Gajjhampa. Your teacher confirms the cycles and their variants before teaching.
Pakhawaj bols are the spoken syllables for each stroke, and Foundation teaches you to recite them before you play them. Module 1B shows you how to read and write bol notation in the Bhatkhande system.
You read an unfamiliar four-matra pattern and notate a paran extract.
The Foundation level of the pakhawaj course is assessed through practical, oral and aural checks with notation tasks. You present a six-minute continuous solo and a three-minute Dhrupad accompaniment study, which a supplied track may support.
Four cue-response exchanges with a live partner test how you answer a performer. Each clause is marked met or not yet met.
