About the Tabla course

The tabla course online, prepared by KalaSudha, teaches the Hindustani drum pair from your first stroke to a judged concert. Teachers based in India and abroad teach live online lessons worldwide, and you book them through KalaSudha on your teacher's calendar. The programme has three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with three modules in each. Beginners need no music background; if you have played before, a placement session finds your level.

Your path in each module is 12 topics: eight core topics plus four open slots your teacher fills from electives, their own topics or both. The full path is 108 topics across nine modules. How long it takes depends on your practice and on how many lessons each topic needs. Your teacher closes a topic only when its check is met.

You learn to count as you learn to play. Padhant, the spoken recitation of bols, comes before the stroke, and tala theory runs through every level: cycles, notation, tihai arithmetic and layakari. Between lessons you record the practice task and your teacher gives feedback on the recording.

Musicians learn from each other as well as from a teacher. You hear how another learner plays the phrase you are working on, and you play for people who know what it takes. In a guru's class, students hear each other's riyaz and accompany one another; sangat, playing with other musicians, is part of the training. A cohort brings that into the course. The guided rehearsal and the review that close every module become a performance for the group, and Intermediate adds phrase exchanges and accompaniment.

One-to-one lessons are always available, and cohorts open from time to time, depending on teachers and demand. Teachers teach live in the language they set for the course. Workshops and summer camps come near you when enough learners sign up; to hear about workshops, register your interest on your city page by email or WhatsApp.

Each level ends with a reviewed presentation and leads to a KalaSudha certificate or diploma (see certificates and diplomas). Register your interest to hear by email or WhatsApp when a cohort's dates and times are announced, or ask about one-to-one lessons in the Academy.

How the course works

One shared core, with your teacher's choices

Your path through one module
8 core topics
Every learner takes them, in order.
4 teacher-set slots
Filled from 6 electives or your teacher’s own topics.
  • Recite first, then play

Padhant comes before the stroke at every level. You say each phrase, then play it, so your teacher can hear whether a fault is in the memory or the hand.
  • Feedback on your recordings

Most topics ask for a practice recording with both hands in view. Your teacher reviews it against the topic's completion check and sets the next correction.
  • Six gharanas, one shared core

Listen to six tabla gharanas from Foundation. Intermediate and Advanced each have an elective for each school, while every learner meets the same core completion checks.
  • Learn alongside others

Join a cohort when one opens, or learn one-to-one. In a cohort the rehearsal and review topics become performances for fellow learners.
