About Intermediate

Intermediate Indian slide guitar develops the glides and phrasing of Hindustani raga, a melodic framework, after you can control pitch with the slide bar. You enter after Foundation or a placement session that confirms the same skills. You build on those early phrases by learning and developing a composition.

In module 2A you extend meend, a glide between notes, and learn gamak, an oscillation around a note. You develop an alap, the unmetered opening of a raga, through three registers. Listening work helps you hear how different players shape the same raga.

Module 2B adds stroke patterns and jod, an exploration with a steady pulse. You learn a gat, a composition within a rhythmic cycle, from notation. Module 2C develops it through vistar, phrase-by-phrase elaboration, and slow taans, melodic runs. You also learn to recognise three ragas and exchange phrases with tabla.

The level has 36 path topics across modules 2A, 2B and 2C. Each module has a pool of 14: eight core topics and six electives. Your teacher fills four open slots from electives, their own topics or both. The common core has no single lineage; style enters through those teacher-set choices in the KalaSudha-prepared programme.

Study live online one-to-one or in a group, with each topic closing after teacher review. Completion includes a ten- to fifteen-minute set in one raga and leads to KalaSudha's Antara Diploma. The Advanced level then takes raga presentation further.

The three Intermediate modules

Develop ornament and phrasing, then learn a composition within a rhythmic cycle. The final module joins these skills in improvisation and a reviewed set in one raga.

  1. 2A

Module 2A: Meend and the singing line

    8 core + 4 teacher-setfrom 14 topics

Extend meend, the glide between notes, and control the pitch through gamak, an oscillating ornament. Develop alap through three registers and compare two approaches to a raga. Practise phrases in Rupak, the suggested seven-beat cycle, before guided rehearsal and review.

    1. Review of Foundation and Bar Resetコア

Check posture, bar contact and the right hand after the break between levels.

    2. Longer meend and controlled arrivalコア

Glide across two swaras and land in tune without overshooting. Explore three-swara glides as further development.

    3. Gamak on the Slideコア

Shake the bar around a swara so it oscillates and the centre stays clear.

    4. The First Raga at Depth: Chalan and Two Linesコア

Learn the first raga's chalan and phrase families, then hear it played in two slide lines and name what differs.

  2. 2B

Module 2B: Strokes and the first gat

    8 core + 4 teacher-setfrom 14 topics

Learn bol patterns, syllables for the plucking strokes, and add a steady pulse in jod. Read a gat from notation in the suggested Teentaal cycle and return to its opening phrase. Rehearse the composition with your teacher before the module review.

    1. Review of 2A and Ornament Stabilityコア

Check that meend and gamak hold their pitch after a week away from them.

    2. Bol Patterns: Da Ra Dir Dirコア

Right-hand bol patterns built from Da, Ra and Dir, played evenly.

    3. The Second Raga: Chalan and Its Neighbourコア

Learn the second raga (suggested: Bhupali) and the raga it is most often confused with.

    4. A Razakhani Gat in Teentaal, from Notationコア

Learn a drut gat in Teentaal (the gat is the teacher's choice) from its written notation.

  3. 2C

    Module 2C: Developing the raga

    8 core + 4 teacher-setfrom 14 topics

Learn a third raga by ear and develop your gat through vistar, melodic elaboration, and slow taans, melodic runs. Study raga classification and time of day. Exchange phrases with tabla, then present a ten- to fifteen-minute set for Intermediate review.

    1. Review of 2B and Weak Linksコア

Find the weakest item from 2A and 2B and spend the session on it.

    2. The Third Raga by Ear and by Ruleコア

Learn the third raga (suggested: Durga) and tell it by ear from the two you already play.

    3. Vistar: Developing the Gatコア

Grow the gat by adding phrases that start from it and return to it, cycle by cycle.

    4. Taan Logic Without Speedコア

Build taans as patterns from the raga's swaras and play them slowly before any speed.

Why Intermediate

What Intermediate builds

  • Ornament with pitch control

Develop longer glides and gamak while keeping their pitch clear. Your teacher checks the arrivals and helps you use each ornament within a raga phrase.

  • A gat you can develop

Learn a composition from notation, then leave it for your own phrases and return on the first beat. Build elaboration before increasing the speed.

  • Phrasing with rhythmic support

Keep a steady pulse in jod and exchange phrases with tabla. Guided rehearsals bring these skills into the set you present at the level review.
