Vocal Gharana Patiala, Punjab Late 19th century

## Origins & History

The thumri belongs to the same lineage as the gharana's khayal, and the founding story of Ali Baksh and Fateh Ali, known as Aliya-Fattu, is told on the [Patiala khayal gharana](/mr-int/gharana/patiala-gharana-khayal) page. Thumri runs through both of the gharana's branches: the Kasur line of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and his brother **Barkat Ali Khan**, and the court line of Amanat Ali Khan.

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was born in Kasur, now in Pakistan, in 1902, and trained first with his father Ali Baksh and his uncle Kale Khan. He became the face of the Patiala gharana. Compact renditions of his thumris circulated as records, and Adit Shankar reports critics who say his style adapted to a mass audience.

Partition split the brothers, as the Patiala khayal page tells. Barkat Ali Khan became a Pakistani at Independence, died in Lahore in 1963 and left a long-playing record of thumris, though Amit Chaudhuri writes that few in India or Pakistan now remember him. Adit Shankar adds that the gharana's Pakistan branch turned towards qawwali after Partition.

## Lineage & Legacy

The guru-shishya tradition passed down through generations

Patiala thumri passed through the gharana's two branches. In the Kasur line it ran from Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Barkat Ali Khan to Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's son Munawar Ali Khan, who taught **Ajoy Chakrabarty** in Calcutta. Ajoy Chakrabarty in turn trained his daughter Kaushiki Chakraborty. In the court line, Amanat Ali Khan sang thumri beside raga and ghazal, and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan names a thumri his elders sang for generations.

Distinctive style, techniques, and aesthetic philosophy

### Overall Style

Punjabi folk song, above all the [tappa](/mr-int/vocal/hindustani-classical/tappa), gave the gharana its **fast, compressed taans**, rapid runs of notes, and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan carried that taan structure into his thumri. Amit Chaudhuri hears virtuosic taankari in his thumris and fast khayals alike. Meenakshi Vashisth notes complex layakari and fluid taans beside the tappa-derived ornament. Writers on thumri set this Punjabi style beside the purbi, or eastern, style of Benares.

#### Tappa taans

Punjabi folk forms, the tappa above all, shaped the gharana's style and gave it the tappa's fast, compressed taans.

#### Taankari in thumri

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan kept the fast taan structure in his thumri as well as his khayal, and Amit Chaudhuri calls the result virtuosic.

#### Punjab folk and purab ang

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan built a Punjab style of thumri that blends Punjab folk tunes with the traditional features of the eastern purab ang.

#### Compact records

Short renditions of his thumris circulated as records. Adit Shankar reports a critical view that his style adapted to suit a mass audience.

## Signature Repertoire

The repertoire is thumri beside khayal, with tappa and dadra. Amit Chaudhuri names a recording by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the thumri or kajri 'Prem agan jiyara' in Manj Khamaj. The tabla player Swapan Chaudhuri names 'Aaye na balam' and 'Yaad piya ki aaye' among his thumris that young musicians cannot ignore. In the court family, the Khamaj thumri 'Mora saiyaan mose bole na' has passed down the generations.

What is the Patiala gharana of thumri?

The Patiala gharana of [thumri](/mr-int/vocal/hindustani-classical/thumri) is the thumri side of the one Patiala gharana, also called Kasur-Patiala, which took shape at the Patiala court in the late 19th century. Its thumri carries the fast, compressed taans of the Punjabi tappa, and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan made it widely known.

Who founded the Patiala gharana of thumri?

The thumri belongs to the one Patiala gharana, which most accounts trace to Ali Baksh and Fateh Ali, a duo known as Aliya-Fattu; Adit Shankar names Kallu Khan instead. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and his brother Barkat Ali Khan became the defining voices of its thumri.

Which musicians belong to the Patiala gharana of thumri today?

In India, Ajoy Chakrabarty, born in Kolkata in 1952 and a disciple of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's son Munawar Ali Khan, sings thumri in the Patiala-Kasur line, and his daughter Kaushiki Chakraborty sings khayal and semi-classical forms. In Pakistan, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan of the court family keeps its thumris.

How does Patiala thumri differ from Benares thumri?

Patiala thumri carries the fast, compressed taans of the Punjabi tappa, while [Benares](/mr-int/gharana/benares-gharana-thumri) thumri is the purab ang, built on bol banao, the phrase-by-phrase elaboration of the words. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan made his Punjab style by blending Punjab folk tunes with traditional features of the purab ang.

Is there a separate Patiala thumri gharana?

No. Thumri runs through both branches of the one Patiala gharana, alongside khayal: the Kasur line of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Barkat Ali Khan, and the court line of Amanat Ali Khan. Its founding story is told on the [Patiala khayal gharana](/mr-int/gharana/patiala-gharana-khayal) page.

What did tappa give the Patiala gharana?

The Punjabi tappa gave the Patiala gharana its fast, compressed taans and much of its ornament. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan kept that taan structure in his thumri as well as his khayal, so the tappa shaped both sides of the gharana.

   Who spread Patiala thumri?

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan became the face of the Patiala gharana, and compact renditions of his thumris circulated as records. His brother Barkat Ali Khan left a long-playing record of thumris in Pakistan, and in Calcutta Ajoy Chakrabarty carries the line on.
