About KalaSudha in Sangli-Miraj
Indian classical music in Sangli-Miraj is made by hand as well as played. On 30 March 2024, India's intellectual property office issued Geographical Indication tags for the sitars and the tanpuras made in Miraj, PTI reported. The tanpura supplies the drone, a constantly sounding tone that reinforces the tonic throughout a concert.
Miraj, in Maharashtra's Sangli district, also drew singers. Abdul Karim Khan, whom the critic Mohan Nadkarni names as founder of the Kirana gharana, later settled in Miraj.
Tabla and Kathak learners in Sangli-Miraj can study on KalaSudha's online courses, which teach every other discipline too, and a KalaSudha certificate or diploma closes each level. Foundation assessment uses practical work and spoken questions. When enough learners in Sangli-Miraj sign up, workshops and summer camps follow, and KalaSudha's concerts include the Kala Festival, a touring festival. A learner taught elsewhere can ask KalaSudha to assess them against its skill milestones.
