About Advanced

Advanced tabla prepares you for a judged thirty-minute concert, with composition and supervised teaching alongside. You enter after Intermediate or a placement session that confirms the same skills. It is the third level of the tabla course prepared by KalaSudha. As a typical guide, Advanced takes 12–30 months, and you agree the pace with your teacher.

Module 3A builds a solo: an opening such as a peshkar or uthan, kayda and rela development with planned contrast, and fixed compositions placed in order. You also sustain slow laya beneath a partner and retune to the lehra's raga. The module ends with a fifteen-minute solo section.

Module 3B covers layakari, rhythm played against the cycle: damdar and bedam tihais from three starting beats, aad, kuaad and biaad patterns, chakradar structures and the transcription of an attributed recording. You analyse the six gharanas through sourced examples, with electives such as Delhi or Punjab.

Module 3C prepares the concert: stage sound, a notated programme with sources, an original kayda with two paltas and a tihai, and one Foundation topic taught under supervision. In a cohort, you rehearse the solo and the programme in front of fellow learners before the judged performance. A judging assessor other than your teacher reviews the concert, and the level leads to a KalaSudha award (see certificates). Ask about Advanced in the Academy.

The three Advanced modules

Advanced turns your repertoire into a concert. The first module builds the solo, the second sharpens rhythm and style analysis, and the third adds composition, teaching and the judged programme.

    1. Review Endurance and Preparationகருவம்

Assess posture and endurance in a sustained take and plan preparation for a longer solo.

    2. Tune and Read the Lehra's Ragaகருவம்

  2. 3B

Module 3B: Advanced layakari and style

Record a demanding phrase and adjust technique until its bols retain their identities.

    2. Construct Tihais From Different Beatsகருவம்

Calculate damdar and bedam tihais from three starting beats and verify each ending.

Why Advanced

What Advanced builds

  • A solo with a shape

Choose an opening, develop kayda and rela with planned contrast, and order fixed compositions so every planned ending lands.
  • Rhythm you can calculate

Write the counts for tihais, chakradars and cross-rhythms, recite them against a hand-count and play each one to sam.
  • Composer and teacher

Compose a kayda and its ending, and teach a Foundation topic while a supervisor records your correction and the learner's response.
