马尔瓦

मारवा

Early evening

Origins & Context

The Marwa raganga represents the archetype of tension, anxiety, and the unsettled transition of twilight in Hindustani classical music. It corresponds to a scale that has no perfect fifth (Pancham), leaving the listener without the usual "resting pillar" of the scale. This omission creates a profound sense of instability and restlessness.

Its core identity is defined by the Marwa Thaat, using Komal Rishabh (r) and Tivra Madhyam (M^). Unlike the peaceful morning ragas or the romantic night ragas, Marwa is the sound of the Sandhiprakash (the junction of light and dark) at sunset. It captures the specific mood of the sun dipping below the horizon, a time of day that is neither day nor night, evoking a sense of urgency and introspection.

Marwa is often described as having a "dry" or "heroic" character, but it is the heroism of a lone warrior or an ascetic struggling with the mind. The melody rarely rests on the tonic Sa, preferring to hover around Re and Dha, which keeps the listener in a state of suspended anticipation.

This raganga embodies Vairagya (Detachment), Anxiety, and Awe, forming the basis for ragas like Puriya, Sohini, and Marwa itself. It is the melody of the "unresolved," compelling the listener to look inward.

Swara Patterns

Aroha (Ascending): S r G M^ D N S' (Note: Pancham (Pa) is totally forbidden in this raganga. The ascent often emphasises the jump from Re to Dha or Ma to Dha)

Avroh (Descending): S' N D M^ G r S

"

Marwa is the sound of the mind when the day is done, but the night has not yet brought rest. It is the anxiety of the twilight.

Performance Context

The Marwa raganga is strictly associated with the Sunset (4th Prahar of the day, roughly 4 PM to 7 PM). It is the definitive "Sandhiprakash" (twilight) raga family.

Emotional Content & Rasa

The Marwa raganga evokes a unique mix of Adbhuta (Wonder) and Roudra (Anger/Intensity), overlaid with a sense of uneasiness. It does not offer the "sweetness" of other families; instead, it offers a gripping, almost hypnotic tension that demands total attention.

Key Techniques

The complete absence of Pa means there is no "home" in the middle of the scale, creating a floating, unanchored feeling.
The note r (Komal Rishabh) is often held long and approached from Dha or Sa, serving as a focal point of tension.
Uniquely, the tonic Sa is often kept in the background ("Gupt"), with the melody revolving around Re and Ni, making the final resolution to Sa incredibly powerful.

Distinctive Features

Use of Komal Rishabh and Tivra Madhyam together.
Total omission of Pancham (Pa).
Tonic (Sa) is often de-emphasized.
Strong association with the visual imagery of the red setting sun.
