About Debaditya Chakraborty

Debaditya Chakraborty is a captivating sitar virtuoso rooted in the Senia-Maihar Gharana, one of Hindustani music’s most profound instrumental lineages. Born into a musically rich environment, he began his sitar journey under his father's guidance, Pt. Debasis Chakraborty, a renowned classical guitar maestro and educator, whose own artistic legacy provided Debaditya with early immersion into the classical idiom. Over the years, Debaditya’s training has been shaped by eminent figures, including Prof. Lovely Sharma and the internationally acclaimed sitar and zitar maestro Sri Niladri Kumar, with additional guidance from maestros such as Late Pt. Brij Bhushan Kabra, Late Padmashree Pt. Bhajan Sopori and Shri Alam Khan, reflecting a rare breadth of musical influence.

Debaditya’s style represents a seamless synthesis of traditional and contemporary expressions. At the heart of his music lies a fluid integration of Gayaki (vocal) and Tantrakari (instrumental) angs, informed by the aesthetic sensibilities of Surbahar and Veena techniques, and enriched with chordal and harmonic innovations. His command of layakari (rhythmic interplay) and melodic development brings vibrant energy and introspective depth to his performances, drawing listeners into an immersive raga experience.

Academically, Debaditya combines artistic passion with scholarly pursuit. His educational path encompasses a B.Sc. in Botany, an M.A. in Sitar, and advanced research work, alongside formal qualifications such as Sangeet Prabhakar and Sangeet Visharad — underscoring a lifelong devotion to both musical and intellectual growth.

Debaditya’s artistry has been recognised widely through prestigious awards and honours: he is a three-time winner of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Music Competition, a Guinness World Records honoree, and a recipient of national scholarships, including from the Ministry of Culture. His performances have graced celebrated platforms such as the Taj Mahotsav, university concert series across India, and international stages, including Celestial Synergy at Fresno State, California.

In 2023, Debaditya performed at KalaSudha’s Purvi Festival, marking a significant chapter in his evolving global presence and highlighting the resonant dialogue his music creates between tradition and contemporary audiences. His recent recordings, including a live EP from Purvi Festival, further reflect his dynamic engagement with today’s classical music landscape.

Beyond performance, Debaditya is a dedicated educator and mentor, having served as a faculty mentor in Mumbai and fostering students’ more profound understanding of classical music. His artistic vision remains rooted in ongoing research, performance, and collaboration — continually expanding the expressive possibilities of the sitar while honouring the lineage that shaped him.
