Flute-Instrument

Carnatic Classical: Carnatic instrumental music is South Indian classical music played on veena, violin, flute and mridangam. Instrumentalists play the same songs as singers, in a singing style.

History & Evolution

A Music Academy, Madras, lecture abstract for the December 2025 centenary of T. R. Mahalingam traces the flute's evolution through excavations, the Silappatikaram, the Natyashastra and sculpture. It says ancient flutes had fewer finger holes and a narrower range, and marks the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the turning point for the Carnatic flute. It credits Sarabha Sastri of Kumbakonam with an important part in that change.

In the same period, the abstract says, Palladam Sanjeeva Rao made the flute a successful Carnatic concert instrument. The Sangeet Natak Akademi, in its 1954 honour, called him the only living disciple of Sarabha Sastri and praised his soft, delicate playing. T. N. Swaminatha Pillai (born 1899), an elder contemporary of Mali, trained with his father and wrote five works on Carnatic music. Mahalingam, known as Mali (born 1926), then made the flute a solo concert instrument in its own right. Sarabha Sastri's line also reached Kalakshetra through H. Ramachandra Shastry, who taught bamboo flute there.

Rigveda Onwards

Ancient Origins

The Sanskrit word venu means bamboo or reed and also flute. It occurs once in the Rigveda, where one scholarly reading takes it as reed flutes. Later evidence cited for the early flute includes the Silappatikaram, the Natyashastra and sculpture.
Late 19th to early 20th century

Sarabha Sastri to Sanjeeva Rao

A 2025 Music Academy lecture abstract treats this period as a milestone and names Sarabha Sastri of Kumbakonam as a key figure in it. His disciple Palladam Sanjeeva Rao then made the flute a successful Carnatic concert instrument.
Mid-20th Century

Modern Revolution

T. R. Mahalingam, known as Mali or Flute Mali, was born in 1926 and began training at about four with his uncle. His technique and stress on pure pitch established the flute as a solo Carnatic concert instrument.
Late 20th century to present

Contemporary Era

After Mali's own award in 1965, Sangeet Natak Akademi awards go to the flautists N. Ramani, his pupil for more than ten years, in 1984, the Sikkil Sisters, a women's flute duo, in 1989, and Shashank Subramanyam in 2017.

Technical Aspects

Transverse Technique

The sound starts at the embouchure hole, the blowing hole. The player's breath forms a jet across it that strikes the far edge and, working in step with the air column inside the bamboo, sustains the note. A faster, shorter jet takes the flute into its higher register.

Gamaka Production

Opening a finger hole has about the same effect as shortening the tube, and a longer tube gives a lower pitch. Closing holes below an open one, called cross-fingering, lengthens the effective tube and flattens the note. Flutes come in many pitches for the same reason: longer flutes sound lower, shorter ones higher, and makers set the bore for the intended pitch.

Flute Sizes and Pitch

A longer tube sounds lower and a shorter one higher, so makers offer Carnatic flutes in many pitches. A flautist chooses the flute that matches the concert's shruti, the tonic pitch for the performance. A Sahapedia photo essay on one Karnataka maker shows him drying thin, even-walled bamboo in an attic and burning the holes with heated steel rods.

  1. Posture and basic tone

This stage covers tone and plain fingering. The player's breath forms a jet across the blowing hole that strikes its far edge and sustains the note; higher notes need a faster, shorter jet. Opening a finger hole acts like shortening the tube and raises the pitch, and each note has its plain fingering.

  2. Sarali varisai and alankarams

Graded note exercises come next, the beginners' material credited to Purandara Dasa. Sarali and janta varisai, sequences of single and paired notes, lead to the tala alankaras, exercises set in the main talas, or rhythmic cycles. Much of this material is in raga Mayamalavagowla. The teacher checks each pitch, phrase and ornament for exact repetition.

  3. Gamakas and Ornamentation

This stage covers gamakas, the ornaments that shape Carnatic melody. The 2025 Music Academy lecture abstract credits Mali with revolutionising flute technique and with stressing shruti shuddhata, purity of pitch. A flute player also bends pitch with the lips: covering more of the blowing hole lowers the note, and rolling the flute outward raises it.

  4. Varnams and Kritis

Repertoire starts with gitams, simple songs in praise of a deity, and moves through swarajatis to varnams, which close the beginners' sequence. Students practise varnams at double speed as well as the base tempo. Kritis follow, the main concert form since the early 20th century, in three parts: pallavi, anupallavi and charanam.

  5. Improvisation and concert playing

Improvisation comes after the composed repertoire. Its forms are raga alapana, an unmetred exposition of the raga; tanam, a pulsing but unmetred exposition; niraval, variations on a line of the song text; and kalpanaswaram, improvised note passages in sol-fa names. Ragam-tanam-pallavi joins alapana, tanam and a developed pallavi line in one suite.
