"As a teacher, I want students to feel the raga rather than play it. Technique is essential, but the real journey is learning to listen to emotion, silence, and the space between notes. I guide learners to blend discipline with imagination, helping them find their own honest voice on the piano while staying rooted in the soul of Indian classical music."

A really enjoyable evening, spiritual in its own way. I'm not particularly spiritual, but it's a very moving performance and elements of I suppose little elements of jazz piano and ambient piano. Um, really enjoyable night for both acts. I'd definitely come again. would recommend. Thank you.

It is an amazing performance by renowned artists from india. It is a very well organized event and the mellifluous beats of different instruments. It really made me transcend into a different zone altogether. It is incredible. I'm just awestruck by the beauty of Indian classical music and the diversity as well, which is really good.

Deepak Shah teaches piano through KalaSudha's online academy. The academy offers classes in every discipline of Indian classical music and keeps adding specialised courses and teachers. The courses are hybrid: KalaSudha brings physical workshops and summer camps where enough learners sign up, so you can learn online and in person. He wants students to feel the raga, and guides them to listen for emotion, silence and the space between notes.

I have never been to an Indian classical concert. Will I follow it?

Yes. You do not need to recognise a raga or count a taal to follow a Hindustani (North Indian) classical concert.

A raga performance opens with the alap, a slow section with no pulse. In instrumental music the jor then brings in a steady pulse, and when the tabla enters with the composition, the rhythm takes hold.

Come at the door time so you hear the opening alap. New to the format? Read what a baithak is and when to arrive. Going to a dance evening? Read what Kathak is.
