About KalaSudha in Bournemouth
KalaSudha presents Indian classical music in Bournemouth at the Palace Court Theatre on Hinton Road, in the town centre. Local architects Seal and Hardy built it in 1931 as an Art Deco playhouse for the Bournemouth Little Theatre Club, with a single balcony. Its Portland stone front follows London's Whitehall Theatre. It later served as a cinema and then a church. Arts University Bournemouth bought it in 2021 and is restoring it as a theatre, with gently raked stalls for up to 250.
The Hinton Road Top bus stop is directly opposite. Westover Gardens and Central car parks are within 200 metres. The interval is the time to meet other listeners, and the musicians usually stay after the music to talk with the audience.
Upcoming Bournemouth concerts are listed on this page, each with its own booking link. KalaSudha's online academy teaches every discipline of Indian classical music, and an instructor shapes each course with KalaSudha. When enough learners in Bournemouth sign up, we bring workshops to the town. Register for updates and we will tell you when Bournemouth has a new date.

I have never been to an Indian classical concert. What instruments and musicians will I hear at the KalaSudha concert in Bournemouth, and how is the evening laid out?
You hear three musicians, and two ways of playing on strings. A Hundred Strings: Ragas by the Sea, KalaSudha's concert at the Palace Court Theatre in Bournemouth, brings together the sitar and the santoor, with tabla. Adnan Khan plucks the sitar and slides between notes, the way a singer does. Vinay Desai strikes the santoor, the hundred-stringed instrument of Kashmir, with a pair of light wooden mallets. He cannot slide on it, so he moves in runs. Ustad Akram Khan plays the tabla, a pair of hand drums.
You need no background. See what to expect at your first concert. The evening runs in two halves with an interval.
