  • Completely unforgettable music that will stay with us for the rest of our days. And I understand that the combinations are unique as well, but that's a bit of a one-off for the meeting of these musicians, so that makes it even more special. So thank you very much for a wonderful evening. A massive pleasure. And thank you so much for organising this.
  • First of all, we have been so privileged to be able to listen to such fabulous music from such prestigious, wonderful, awesome artists. And the tabla, it was just like gliding. It was a dance on the tabla. It was fantastic. The maestro Akram Khan was just the world's best, I would say. And everyone, their Monsoon Raga was fabulous. The piano, sitar with piano is something we've never heard. So, thank you so much. Thank you for bringing these maestros to Norwich. Thank you. Thank you so much. It's an honor to host them here. Thank you. Thank you very much.
  • It was really mesmerizing, so rhythmic, and just felt transported, it was beautiful, really enjoyed the evening, and it was great to talk to the musicians afterwards, they were so friendly and approachable, it was such a treat

About KalaSudha in Norwich

KalaSudha's Norwich Ragas have taken place in two Grade I listed buildings in the city centre. On 19 September 2025 we presented a double bill at The Assembly House on Theatre Street. Pianist Deepak Shah played ragas with tabla accompaniment; after the break Pandit Debasis Chakroborty took up the Indian slide guitar with Ustad Akram Khan. Between sets the audience talked over refreshments.

On 19 September 2026 we came back for two concerts in one day at St Andrew's Hall, the nave of a 14th-century Dominican friary on St Andrew's Plain. Ustad Akram Khan's noon tabla solo, with Satwinder Pal Singh on sarangi, moved from whisper-soft slow beats to fast cascades. In the evening Pandit Debasis Chakroborty and Giuliano Modarelli paired Indian slide guitar with Western guitar, joined by Dr Sam Evans on tabla and R. N. Prakash on ghatam, the clay pot drum.

Both Norwich Ragas fell on 19 September, a year apart. Register for updates to hear first if Norwich Ragas returns to St Andrew's Plain. Pandit Debasis Chakroborty, who played slide guitar at both, teaches it online in Indian Slide Guitar with Debasis Chakroborty.

The Assembly House stands where John Le Brun founded the Chapel and Hospice of St Mary's in the Field in 1248.

  • One ticket, both 2026 concerts

In 2026 a Full Day ticket covered the noon tabla solo and the 6:30pm guitar evening at St Andrew's Hall.

  • The tabla solo under the friary roof

Ustad Akram Khan's solo was programmed to set compositions from different eras of the Ajrada Gharana beside his own improvisations.

I have never been to an Indian classical concert. What kind of music and musicians will I hear at a KalaSudha concert in Norwich?

A raga performance opens with the alap, a slow section with no pulse. In instrumental music the jor then brings in a steady pulse, and when the tabla enters with the composition, the rhythm takes hold. KalaSudha concerts run in two halves with a short interval, about 2 to 2½ hours. Norwich has heard a tabla solo by Ustad Akram Khan and a double bill of ragas on piano and Indian slide guitar. See the first-time listener guide and Norwich concerts.

Where can I meet other people in Norwich who love Indian classical music, and can I talk with the musicians at KalaSudha concerts there?

Indian classical music lovers in Norwich meet in the interval of KalaSudha's concerts at St Andrew's Hall and The Assembly House, and talk again once the music ends. Listeners have met the musicians there too: see Can I meet the musicians at a Norwich concert?
