About KalaSudha in Antwerp

Indian classical music in Antwerp was set for De Singel on Desguinlei on Wednesday 18 March 2026: a duet of sitar and bamboo flute, with mridangam. The listing presented the evening as a meeting of two classical traditions. Carnatic music of south India has its own bamboo flute, the venu, also called the pullanguzhal. The venu has eight finger holes, while the north Indian bansuri has six in line with the blow hole. Both are cut from a length of bamboo.

For Antwerp, KalaSudha is preparing concerts by top-class Indian classical musicians and, where interest allows, workshops. Every Antwerp programme we publish will name its instruments, so a flute lover knows which concert to choose. First-time listeners need no background in either tradition.

You can learn either flute online with a live teacher at the KalaSudha academy, starting at Foundation level. KalaSudha also sells the venu worldwide, made to order, and repairs any venu wherever it was bought. An Antwerp workshop waits on enough local interest and suitable arrangements, and nothing is fixed. To hear when that changes, press Register for updates.

Why Antwerp

What sets KalaSudha apart in Antwerp

  • Sa on two holes

On the venu, Sa, the first note of the scale, is fingered with the first two holes covered. The eighth hole stays open except in special fingerings that cover all eight.

  • How the venu reached concerts

Sarabha Sastri of Kumbakonam (1872 to 1904) developed a fingering system that brought the venu into Carnatic concerts. The flautist known as Mali later made it a solo instrument.

  • Looking after a bamboo flute

Oil the bore of a bamboo venu with mustard or walnut oil, only up to the blow-hole and only when the bore is dry. KalaSudha services any venu, wherever you bought it.
