About This Video

Shanish Kumar Gyawali closes his Raag Madhuvanti performance at the Purvi Festival 2023, Motihari with this Jhala, the rhythmically driven finale that follows the opening alap and the gat section. Aditya Dip accompanies on pakhawaj and Pankaj Rai on tabla.

Jhala brings a bansuri performance to its close through rapid, repetitive strokes on the lower drone string, layered over escalating rhythmic cycles from the tabla and pakhawaj. In Madhuvanti, the Jhala concentrates the raga's dominant Pancham into short, insistent patterns, compressing the phrases that the alap and gat sections drew out at length. The pakhawaj and tabla push against each other as the tempo climbs, and Gyawali's bansuri holds the raga's melodic thread through the acceleration, bringing the full arc of the performance to its end.

Late afternoon
A majestic late-afternoon raga of the Todi Thaat. Featuring a dominant Pancham and Teevra Madhyama, it balances romantic Shringar Rasa with technical depth. Known globally for its similarity to the Ukrainian Dorian mode, it is the definitive melody of the "Golden Hour."
