About the Album
Pandit Debasis Chakroborty of the Senia-Maihar Gharana plays solo Indian slide guitar across the six tracks of The Pulse - A Meditational Journey, released on 15 March 2025. Based in Agra and on the music faculty of Mangalayatan University, he has toured Australia, the USA and Europe, and here he turns the instrument's long glides and held notes to one end: music to sit still with.
Four tracks rest on named ragas. Raag Kirwani opens the set, a late-night scale that matches the Western harmonic minor and carries a quiet sadness. Charukeshi follows, a Carnatic raga with flat dha and ni that moves between devotion and longing. Bhairavi, the raga that closes most Hindustani concerts, takes the longest track at over nine minutes. Mishra Pilu brings the light, flexible character of thumri, with notes borrowed from outside the raga.
The last two tracks step outside a single raga. Journey through the Cloud draws on more than one raga, and Thames - The Eternal Rhythm carries a Bhawaiya melody, the folk song of North Bengal, to the river that runs through London. The six pieces run for thirty-three minutes in all, from the three-minute Kirwani to the nine-minute Bhairavi, and the titles state the intent: raga music shaped for meditation.
