Origins & Context
Raag Ahir is a Hindustani morning raga outside the ten thaats that uses komal Re and komal Ni with shuddha Ma, Pa and Dha; accounts differ on its Ga. Komal means lowered and shuddha means natural, and a thaat is a parent scale. It is also written Raag Ahiri, and George Howlett lists Aheer and Aheeri.
In the notation here, lowercase marks a komal note. Deepak Raja, citing B. Subba Rao's Raga Nidhi, lists Ahir/Ahiri as S r G M P D n, with shuddha Ga. In that account Sa is the vadi, the most prominent note, and Pa the samvadi, its partner. Raja's 2008 analysis of Ahiri also discusses a treatment with komal Ga. George Howlett gives the scale with komal Ga, S r g M P D n, and the ascent and descent on this page follow his lines.
Raja places Ahir among the early-morning ragas. His list gives Ahir Bhairav the same notes as Ahir, with Ma as vadi and Sa as samvadi. Mohi Bahauddin Dagar describes an Ahir element inside Ahir Bhairav.
KalaSudha presents Hindustani musicians in concert and releases their recordings. Its academy teaches ragas online and in local workshops, and each course is built by its instructor with KalaSudha.
