History & Origins
The violin arrived in India in the late 18th century through British East India Company military bands stationed at Fort St. George in Madras. For its first decades it was performed by European musicians for dances and marches and had no role in Indian classical music. South Indian musicians encountered it in this colonial context and recognised that its fretless fingerboard and bowed sustain could accommodate the ornamental language of Carnatic melody in ways the veena and flute could not.
Baluswami Dikshitar (1786–1858), brother of the composer Muthuswami Dikshitar, is the figure most closely associated with the violin's adoption into Carnatic music. He observed Western players, modified the playing posture from the shoulder-mounted Western position to a floor-seated position with the scroll resting on the ankle, and developed techniques for producing the gamakas and jaru slides that Carnatic music requires. By the early 19th century, the violin was appearing in Carnatic concert settings as accompaniment for vocalists. Dwaram Venkataswami Naidu, T.N. Krishnan, and Lalgudi G. Jayaraman developed the instrument into a solo concert voice through the 20th century, each contributing distinct approaches to bow control and melodic elaboration.
In North India, the violin's entry into classical music was slower. The sarangi served as the primary bowed accompaniment in the Hindustani tradition, and there was less immediate need for the violin in that role. Pioneers including Pandit V.G. Jog and Gajananrao Joshi formalised the violin's use in the Hindustani system in the early 20th century, adapting it to the khayal gayaki style with its sustained meend and slower phrase shapes. N. Rajam later established a significant solo reputation in Hindustani violin, training students who continue to perform in this tradition. Today the violin holds a primary place in Carnatic ensemble and solo music and a smaller but growing place in Hindustani classical performance.

Construction & Craftsmanship
Materials Used
A violin body consists of over 70 individual parts, assembled entirely with hide glue rather than mechanical fasteners. Hide glue is reversible under controlled heat and moisture, allowing a luthier to open the instrument for repairs without damaging the wood. The top plate is hand-carved from seasoned spruce, typically with at least ten years of drying time. The maker varies the plate's thickness across its surface by fractions of a millimetre: this graduation controls how the plate flexes under the bow's pressure and shapes the instrument's fundamental and overtone character. The back, ribs, and neck are carved from flamed maple, selected for its density and acoustic reflectivity.
Inside the body, two components determine the instrument's tonal character. The bass bar, a narrow strip of spruce glued to the inside of the top plate below the G string, distributes low-frequency vibration and reinforces the plate against the downward force of the bridge. The soundpost, a small spruce dowel standing between the top and back plates just behind the treble foot of the bridge, transfers high-frequency energy between the two plates and stabilises the top under string tension. The soundpost is not glued; a luthier adjusts its position using a specialised tool. A shift of less than a millimetre changes the balance between the instrument's registers. Experienced luthiers fit both components by ear, listening to the instrument's response across its full range after each adjustment.
Varnish is applied in multiple thin coats of oil or spirit-based finish, each coat allowed to dry fully before the next. This method keeps the varnish flexible and allows the wood to vibrate. Bridge setup for Indian classical use differs from Western standard: the bridge curve is flatter to allow multi-string sliding ornaments, and string action is kept low to reduce the effort needed for continuous gamaka movement across the fingerboard.
Maintenance & Care
- Humidity: Wood expands in monsoon humidity and contracts in dry seasons, which can open seams or crack the top plate. Maintain 45–55% relative humidity inside the case using a digital hygrometer and a Dampit or similar humidifier during dry periods. Do not leave the violin in a car boot or near a heater.
- Cleaning after playing: Rosin dust bonds to varnish over time if left in place. Wipe the body and strings with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth after every session. Use a separate cloth for the strings and the body to avoid transferring rosin back to the varnish. Do not use furniture polish or household cleaners on the instrument.
- Bridge check: String tension pulls the bridge forward toward the fingerboard with each tuning. Check the bridge weekly by sighting along the tailpiece: the back face of the bridge should stand perpendicular to the top plate. If it has begun to lean, ease string tension and straighten it by hand. A severely warped or cracked bridge must be replaced by a luthier.
- Peg maintenance: Pegs that slip or stick disrupt tuning and can damage the pegbox. Apply peg compound (Hill peg dope or similar) at the contact areas when needed: it reduces slipping in humid conditions and sticking in dry conditions. Do not use chalk or pencil lead as substitutes.
- Annual luthier service: Have the instrument inspected by a luthier once a year. The soundpost can shift from transport or humidity changes; the luthier will reset it if needed. Open seams should be reglued before they extend. The luthier will also check neck angle, action height, and string clearance across the fingerboard.
