Vocal Gharana Rai-Ki-Talwandi, Punjab Earlier

Origins & History

Dilip Chandra Vedi, who learnt from Talwandi singers in the 1920s, named Nayak Chand Khan and Suraj Khan as the founders, and a 2020 survey in the journal Etnomuzikoloji Dergisi records the belief that they lived in Akbar's time. Vandana Shukla, writing in The Tribune in 2015, gives their earlier names as Sudhakar Pandit (Chand Khan) and Diwakar Pandit (Suraj Khan). She calls them brothers who settled in Punjab and gave rise to four gharanas: Talwandi, Sham Chaurasia, Kapurthala and Haryana Dhunga. The 2020 survey records a tradition that both were pupils of Swami Haridas.

Baldeep Singh, writing in the Journal of Punjab Studies in 2009, says the gharana traces its roots to Rai-Ki-Talwandi, a small former principality near Ludhiana. The Rai family, Nawabs of Talwandi, were hereditary patrons of the singers' ancestors.

In the 20th century the gharana was headed by Mehar Ali Khan, who was employed by a Sikh landowner. When that patron left for Indian Punjab in 1947, the family, already living in what became Pakistan, lost its livelihood. Ritwik Sanyal and Richard Widdess report that before Partition Talwandi singers were said to compose dhrupad-style music for Sikh ritual at Amritsar; Baldeep Singh disputes the informants behind that account. A family in Una, now in Himachal Pradesh, also claimed the Talwandi gharana; its last dhrupad singer died in 2001.

"Talwandi gharana is allegiant to khandarvani but it is not its sole repository"

Lineage & Legacy

The guru-shishya tradition passed down through generations

The documented line runs through Mehar Ali Khan's family. His sons Muhammad Afzal Khan and Muhammad Hafiz Khan sang together in unison until Afzal Khan, the elder, retired because of frail health. Hafiz Khan then taught his son Ali and his nephew Labrez, who perform as the gharana's heirs in Pakistan. Outside the family, Dilip Chandra Vedi and Baldeep Singh learnt from Talwandi singers.

Distinctive style, techniques, and aesthetic philosophy

Overall Style

Sunil Dutta, writing in 1999, describes the few recordings that exist: very fast closing sections of the alap, the unmetred opening, and compositions with highly complex rhythmic variation. He notes apparent similarities with the Darbhanga gharana. Muhammad Hafiz Khan claimed the Khandar bani, one of dhrupad's four named styles, as Talwandi's own, and placed Islam at the centre of his account of dhrupad.

Khandar bani

Hafiz Khan claimed the Khandar bani for the gharana. Baldeep Singh agrees, though he denies that Talwandi is the bani's only holder.

Fast alap endings

Sunil Dutta hears very fast concluding sections of the alap in the few Talwandi recordings that exist.

Rhythmic compositions

Dutta describes Talwandi compositions with highly complex rhythmic variation, and notes apparent likeness to Darbhanga singing.

Allah in the alap

Hafiz Khan derived alaap from Allah-ap, described its four stages in Sufi terms and sang the words nit taran taaran, Allah tero naam in it.

Signature Repertoire

By Baldeep Singh's account, Muhammad Hafiz Khan sang mostly in chautal, at times in sultal, jhaptal and tivra, and rarely in dhamar. The gharana held its chautal compositions in Raag Khat Gujri as prized assets, and its repertoire includes sultal compositions at slow tempo. Vandana Shukla presents the music as dhrupad kirtan, Sikh devotional singing in dhrupad style, and calls its traditional compositions reetein.

A Dagar performance centres on a long, slow and meditative alap, the unmetred opening, with close attention to microtonal shading and to the raga's character. A composition with pakhawaj, the barrel drum, follows. The family has long sung in pairs of brothers.

Influence & Legacy

The gharana's music also lives in Sikh devotional singing. Sikh musicians told Baldeep Singh that over several centuries many Talwandi singers became Sikhs and sang gurbani. In Indian Punjab, Talwandi's dhrupad kirtan survives through a few practitioners at Bhaini Sahib, who still sing its compositions.

What is the Talwandi gharana of dhrupad?

The Talwandi gharana is a Punjab lineage of dhrupad singing. Tradition traces it to Chand Khan and Suraj Khan in Akbar's time, and Baldeep Singh locates its roots at Rai-Ki-Talwandi near Ludhiana. Its few remaining singers live in Pakistan, and its compositions are also sung at Bhaini Sahib in Indian Punjab.

Who founded the Talwandi gharana of dhrupad?

Tradition credits Chand Khan and Suraj Khan. Dilip Chandra Vedi, who learnt from Talwandi singers in the 1920s, named them as Nayak Chand Khan and Suraj Khan. Vandana Shukla gives their earlier names as Sudhakar Pandit and Diwakar Pandit and calls them brothers who settled in Punjab.

Which musicians belong to the Talwandi gharana of dhrupad today?

Ali Hafeez and Labrez, also spelt Labraiz Afzal, son and nephew of Muhammad Hafiz Khan, performed as the gharana's young inheritors in Lahore in 2025. Hafiz Khan, who died in 2009, taught them both. In Indian Punjab a few practitioners at Bhaini Sahib still sing the gharana's compositions as dhrupad kirtan.

How does the Talwandi gharana differ from the Dagar gharana of dhrupad?

The Dagar gharana sings the Dagar vani with a long, slow alap, while Talwandi singers claim the Khandar bani, and Sunil Dutta hears very fast closing sections of the alap and highly complex rhythmic variation in their few recordings. Talwandi is a Punjab line whose singers now live in Pakistan.

Is Talwandi the oldest dhrupad gharana?

Vandana Shukla calls it the oldest gharana of dhrupad singers, while the 2020 survey in Etnomuzikoloji Dergisi says the Dagar gharana is believed to hold that place. Baldeep Singh calls Talwandi one of the ancient schools of dhrupad and says it is impossible to tell which family first held each bani.

How is the Talwandi gharana related to the Sham Chaurasia gharana?

Tradition credits both to the same pair, Chand Khan and Suraj Khan. Vandana Shukla says the two settled in Punjab and gave rise to four gharanas, Talwandi, Sham Chaurasia, Kapurthala and Haryana Dhunga. Sham Chaurasia later turned to khayal, while Talwandi stayed with dhrupad.

Which bani does the Talwandi gharana follow?

The Khandar bani. Muhammad Hafiz Khan claimed it for the gharana and linked its name to his ancestor Nayak Khanda Rai. Baldeep Singh agrees on the bani but derives its name from Kandahar, and denies that Talwandi is its only holder. Banglapedia's tradition names it after Tansen's son-in-law from Khandar.

What is the gharana's link with Bhaini Sahib and dhrupad kirtan?

Vandana Shukla presents Talwandi's music as dhrupad kirtan, Sikh devotional singing in dhrupad style. In Indian Punjab it survives through a few practitioners at Bhaini Sahib. Sanyal and Widdess report that Talwandi singers were said to compose dhrupad-style music for Sikh ritual at Amritsar before Partition.
