About KalaSudha in Ranchi
Indian classical music in Ranchi shares Jharkhand with one of the three styles of Chhau, a martial dance-drama of eastern India in which dancers enact episodes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, local folklore and abstract themes. In 2010 UNESCO inscribed Chhau on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Writers disagree on where it belongs: some call Chhau semi-classical, and its classification is still debated. The Jharkhand style's masks cover the whole face with restrained, pastel-painted human features, so the dancer's body carries the role.
KalaSudha's online courses cover tabla, sitar and every other discipline, and Ranchi learners can join any of them. Every level ends with a certificate or diploma. Learners of other teachers can ask for an assessment, and once enough Ranchi learners sign up, workshops and summer camps follow in the city. KalaSudha also stages concerts, with the Kala Festival, a touring festival, among them. The instructor signs off a topic only after reviewing your work. At Foundation, assessment is practical work and spoken questions.
