About the course

About this course

108 path topics across nine modules

The Indian slide guitar course, prepared by KalaSudha, teaches Hindustani raga, a melodic framework, through live online lessons. You play a lap-held guitar with a slide bar that sets the pitch. The programme has nine modules across Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. Beginners need no guitar experience or knowledge of notation. If you have trained before, your teacher assesses your skills before placing you at a suitable level.

Each module has 14 available topics: eight core topics and six electives. Your path contains 12 topics, the eight core topics plus four slots your teacher fills from electives, their own topics or both. The teacher sets the opening topic first and ends the module with guided rehearsal, then review and presentation.

Foundation begins with tuning and clean notes under the bar, then introduces short phrases in one raga. Intermediate adds longer glides between notes, rhythmic patterns and a first gat, a composition played within a rhythmic cycle. Advanced develops full raga presentation and concert preparation.

The shared core has no single lineage. Your teacher brings their playing style through electives and their own topics. You work towards common skills whichever teacher you study with. If you change teachers, you keep the topics they have closed and the skill credits you have earned.

The full path contains 108 topics across nine modules. A topic closes after your teacher reviews your work and may take more than one lesson. You can learn one-to-one at your own pace or in a group on a timetable. You book online lessons through KalaSudha in your own time zone.

Learning also includes workshops and summer camps near you when enough learners in your area sign up. KalaSudha issues its own certificates and diplomas at the taught levels. Each course award records the skills and learning hours, along with the teacher and tradition you studied under.

Learning objectives

  • Set up and tune your instrument, then play clean notes with the bar.
  • Find notes by ear and keep their pitch steady through phrases.
  • Play raga phrases and compositions within a counted rhythmic cycle.
  • Develop raga improvisation through controlled glides and changes in melodic pace.
  • Compose and notate a gat, then teach a Foundation topic under supervision.
  • Prepare and perform a thirty-minute Advanced programme with tabla for assessment.

The three course levels

Each level has three modules and develops the skills needed for the next. Begin with control of the instrument and your ear, then build towards a full raga performance.

  • Foundation

Build a stable playing position and tune your instrument. Learn Da and Ra, the two plucking strokes, and find notes by ear. Practise melodic exercises against a counted cycle, then play short raga phrases and an early alap, the unmetered opening.

  • Intermediate

Develop meend, a glide between notes, and gamak, a forceful oscillation around a note. Add rhythmic stroke patterns and jod, an exploration with a steady pulse. Learn a gat and develop its phrases through improvisation, with accurate returns to the cycle.

  • Advanced

Study ragas at depth and develop faster melodic passages and rhythmic control. Practise ornaments and jhala, the rapid alternation of melody and drone strings. Compose and notate a gat, teach under supervision and prepare a judged thirty-minute programme with tabla.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can a beginner, a child or a player returning after a long break start learning Indian slide guitar?

Beginners learn Indian slide guitar with KalaSudha online and in workshops, starting at Foundation level. The first stage sets your posture, with the guitar flat across your lap, and teaches the slide in an open tuning. We teach children as well as adults; ask us about a starting age and about a size for a younger learner.

Players returning after a long break start again where they left off. Our courses run in levels, and your teacher first checks where you stand.

How long does it take to learn Indian slide guitar?

How quickly you learn Indian slide guitar depends on regular practice and on your ear, because a slide bar sets each pitch. At Foundation, with the guitar across your lap, you hold the bar still at one position and pluck one melody string until your teacher hears a clean attack.

Later stages add meend, a glide made by moving the bar after the pluck. Each level you complete on KalaSudha's courses earns an award, and the award records your learning hours. You learn live and one-to-one online, with workshops and summer camps where enough learners sign up.

How do online Indian classical music lessons work across time zones?

KalaSudha's online Indian classical music lessons use your own time zone when you book. The platform converts the times.

One-to-one lessons are live, in HD video with stereo audio built for music. The platform records them for replay before your next lesson. You can also study in a group.

How much do online Indian classical music lessons cost?

Your teacher sets the price of online Indian classical music lessons with KalaSudha for each type of lesson they give. You book and pay through KalaSudha and receive an invoice.

To ask what a teacher charges, visit the Academy, press Talk to an Advisor and tell us what you want to learn.

How are students of online Indian classical music courses assessed?

On KalaSudha's online Indian classical music courses, teachers assess students topic by topic. Each topic credits named skills, and the teacher closes it only after reviewing the student's work. Foundation assessment uses practical work and spoken questions. Intermediate adds written theory, and Advanced adds theory papers and a judged stage performance. A module certificate follows each module, and KalaSudha issues an award at the end of each level.

What does a KalaSudha certificate show?

A KalaSudha certificate shows the discipline and the skills the learner attained. A certificate earned on a KalaSudha course also records the learning hours. It names the teacher and tradition the learner studied under, as a record of where they learned. KalaSudha issues every award itself. The taught levels lead to the Sthayi Certificate at Foundation, the Antara Diploma at Intermediate and the Sanchari Advanced Diploma at Advanced.
