St Andrew's Hall, Norwich
St Andrew's Hall, Norwich: a Grade I listed medieval hall seating 600, home of KalaSudha's live Indian classical music at the Kala Festival each September.
About St Andrew's Hall, Norwich
St Andrew's Hall stands on St Andrew's Plain in the centre of Norwich, the great nave of a Dominican friary the friars built in the 14th century. It anchors the most complete medieval friary complex still standing in England. Norwich City Council runs it today as the largest of The Halls, a Grade I listed concert hall that seats around 600 under a high timbered roof. Stone walls and an open span give the room a long, warm resonance, the kind of acoustic that lets a raga settle and breathe. For anyone chasing live music in Norwich, few rooms put this much history behind the sound.
KalaSudha comes back to Norwich every September for the Kala Festival. Last year we filled The Assembly House on 19 September 2025 with Norwich Ragas: Piano & Slide Guitar Unbound, a double bill of ragas on piano and Indian slide guitar carried on tabla. The hall sold out, and the crowd stayed on between sets to talk over the music.
This September the festival steps up to St Andrew's Hall. On 19 September 2026, Pandit Debasis Chakroborty brings his Indian slide guitar to the hall for Norwich Ragas: Slide & Strum on The Mystic Frets, with guitarist Giuliano Modarelli, Dr Sam Evans on tabla, and RN Prakash on ghatam. The first half holds a classical raga set in Rupak and Jhaptal cycles, then the players open into fusion after the interval.
You will find St Andrew's Hall a short walk from Norwich Market, the Forum, and the rail and bus stations, with pay-and-display parking close by on the surrounding streets. Book early for the best seats, and join us in Norwich for a night of Indian classical music in one of the city's oldest rooms.
