Origins & Context

Raag Desh è un'icona culturale del subcontinente indiano. Appartenente al Khamaj Thaat, è un raga "Chanchal" (giocoso) e "Abhisarika" che cattura l'essenza del paesaggio indiano. La sua struttura è semplice, ma la sua risonanza emotiva è vasta, andando dal fervore eroico del patriottismo al tenero desiderio di una sera piovosa. 

Di solito eseguito nel secondo prahar della notte, Desh è spesso categorizzato come un raga "Megh-Pradhan", cantato durante la stagione dei monsoni. La sua caratteristica distintiva è l'uso duale di Nishad: Shuddha Ni (N) nell'ascesa, che fornisce un senso di speranza crescente, e Komal Ni (n) nella discesa, che evoca una malinconia gentile, simile alla pioggia. 

Desh vs. Khamaj vs. Sorat All'interno della famiglia Khamaj Thaat, Desh occupa una posizione intermedia unica: 

  • Desh e Khamaj: Entrambi usano il Nishad duale. Khamaj è un raga Shadava-Sampurna che si appoggia su Shuddha Ga (G). Desh spesso salta G nell'ascesa o gli dà meno peso, dandogli una qualità più aperta e volante.
  • Desh e Sorat sono spesso confusi. La differenza chiave è il Gandhar (G). In Sorat, G è rigorosamente evitato o usato minimamente come nota di abbellimento. In Desh, G è essenziale nella discesa (PDmGRS) per fornire il suo caratteristico calore e sapore romantico. vs. Tilak Kamod: Entrambi condividono un set di note simile, ma il Chalan (movimento) è invertito. Tilak Kamod è "Vakra" (contorto), mentre Desh è più lineare e "Sanchari" (scorrevole).
