Materials Used
전문가용 시타르 제작은 유기 재료와 기계적 정밀함을 완벽히 결합해야 하는 더딘 수공예 과정입니다. 크고 잘 말린 박(Lagenaria siceraria)으로 만드는 툼바(Tumba, 공명실)를 고르는 데서 시작합니다. 이런 박은 마하라슈트라주 미라지 같은 지역에서 자라며, 그곳 기후가 깊은 공명에 필요한 두께와 균일함을 줍니다.
목(단디)과 울림판(타블리)은 건조한 음향목을 손으로 깎아 만들며, 주로 툰(Toon, 인도 마호가니)을, 드문 옛 모델에서는 티크(Teak)를 씁니다. 나무는 여러 해 건조해야 20여 개 금속 현의 높은 장력 아래에서도 뒤틀리지 않습니다. 목과 공명통을 잇는 접합부인 굴루(Gulu)는 구조적 견고함의 중요한 지점입니다. 보통 보강하고 섬세하게 깎아 악기의 미적 중심으로 삼습니다.
고급 제작의 표징은 자와리, 곧 주 브리지를 다듬는 작업입니다. 이는 단순한 절단이 아니라 낙타뼈나 사슴뿔에 새기는 미세한 '경사면'입니다. 장인은 브리지를 갈며 현의 진동에 몇 시간씩 귀 기울여, 시타르에 천상의 음색을 주는 그 열린 소리가 날 때까지 다듬습니다. 마지막으로 악기에 프렌치 폴리시나 셸락을 입혀 나무를 보호하면서도 충분히 유연하게 두어, 악기가 자유로이 숨 쉬고 울리게 합니다.
Maintenance & Care
시타르는 주로 박과 얇은 음향목으로 이루어져 환경 변화에 매우 민감합니다. 관리에서 가장 중요한 것은 알맞은 습도 관리입니다. 우리는 상대습도(RH) 45-55% 유지를 권합니다. 건조한 기후에서는 박이 약해져 갈라질 수 있고, 몬순 지역에서는 습도가 너무 높아 나무가 부풀어 소리가 둔해지거나 브리지가 뒤틀립니다.
프렛과 현의 수명을 위해 청소는 필수입니다. 연습이 끝날 때마다 연주자는 부드러운 마른 천으로 현을 닦아 부식을 일으키는 기름과 땀을 없애야 합니다. 파르다(Parda, 프렛)는 실로 묶여 있어 시간이 지나면 헐거워집니다. 이 묶음을 점검하고 이따금 마찰 줄감개(쿤티)에 광유를 한 방울 떨어뜨리면 연주 중에도 음정이 유지됩니다. 끝으로 자와리 브리지는 현의 마찰로 차츰 홈이 패여 음색을 해칠 수 있습니다. 해마다 전문 장인에게 '셋업'을 한 번 받아 브리지 표면을 다시 다듬으면 평생 음색을 맑게 지킬 수 있습니다.
