ഇന്ത്യയുടെ Sacred Movement Traditions: Ancient Wisdom-ൽ വേരൂന്നിയ എട്ട് Classical Forms
Indian classical dance traces its theoretical origins to the Natyashastra, composed around the 2nd century CE. This Sanskrit treatise, attributed to the sage Bharata Muni, codified principles of dramatic performance, movement vocabulary, facial expression, and aesthetic theory that remain foundational. Temple sculpture from the Chola, Chalukya, and Hoysala periods (9th-13th centuries) provides visual evidence of dance forms flourishing as integral elements of Hindu worship.
For centuries, hereditary practitioners maintained these traditions within temple and court contexts. The Devadasi system in South India, Mahari tradition in Odisha, and comparable systems elsewhere supported specialised training and repertoire transmission. Royal patronage, particularly in the Thanjavur Maratha and Travancore courts, enabled technical elaboration and compositional development.
The colonial period brought disruption. The Anti-Nautch movement (1890s-1930s) stigmatised temple dance traditions. Revival efforts by nationalist reformers reconstituted the forms for modern presentation. Rukmini Devi Arundale established Kalakshetra (1936), creating a model for institutional training. Similar revival efforts across regions brought Odissi, Kuchipudi, and other forms to concert stages. The Sangeet Natak Akademi's recognition of eight classical forms (Sattriya added in 2000) established an official framework for the contemporary discipline.
The philosophical foundation of Indian classical dance rests on Rasa theory, articulated in the Natyashastra. Rasa (aesthetic essence or flavour) arises through the combination of Vibhava (determinants), Anubhava (consequents), and Vyabhichari Bhava (transient emotions) working upon Sthayi Bhava (permanent emotional states). The eight primary rasas (expanded to nine with Shanta) provide the framework for emotional communication: Shringara (love), Hasya (mirth), Karuna (sorrow), Raudra (fury), Vira (heroism), Bhayanaka (fear), Bibhatsa (disgust), and Adbhuta (wonder).
Dance serves as Sadhana (spiritual practice). The body becomes instrument for manifesting divine forms and narratives. The Natyashastra describes dance as offering that pleases the gods, and temple traditions maintained this devotional orientation. Even in contemporary concert settings, many dancers approach performance as a form of worship.
The concept of Bhakti (devotion) infuses repertoire across forms. Compositions address deities, particularly Krishna, Shiva, and the Goddess in her various manifestations. Through abhinaya (expression), the dancer embodies these divine figures or devotees approaching them, creating opportunities for both performer and audience to participate in devotional experience.
